There's always a couple of matches each year when a keeper has their best performance of the year; of course this was one of them.

We had 31 attempts and 14 on target. The expectation of that kind of performance is about 3 goals. Krul of course turned that single handed into 0 goals.

Very frustrating.

As is a world where Erik Lamela sits out the entire game and Defoe is considered 'the answer' to a team chasing goals. Bringing Defoe on when chasing the game was to my knee-jerking mind the single worst decision in AVB's entire tenure.

On the whole Newcastle's plan was decent, press us into oblivion, stop Townsend and defend. The first two they did well, the defending they didn't. How we didn't score will be one of the great mysteries and people may well talk about it long into the future, it really was that freakish. To have the entire second half and pepper their goal and end up with nothing... it defies belief, unless, you're a Spurs fan, then it's par for the course. Grrr...

Friedel 6 Fine apart from not being Lloris
Walker 6 Too little end product and indecisive
Dawson 6 Found out against pace
Chiriches 7 Tried to go forward
Vertonghen 7 Good shift
Paulinho 6 Unlucky not to score, general play a bit sub par
Dembele 5 He's had a bit of a mare there, Jeff.
Sigurdsson 6 Not involved enough
Eriksen 8 Shit dead balls, but general play was much more like it, so fuck off Alan Smith.
Soldado 6 Had chances
Townsend 6 Well marshalled

Sandro 8 Classic Sandro
Kaboul 7 Solid
Defoe 1 Please somebody buy him

Lennon: Better than last week
Lamela: What does he have to do to get on the pitch?

AVB: Worst substitution ever. 'I need a goal, let's bring on a striker!' is schoolboy management.

Team: Unlucky not to win easily, very frustrating.

Pardew: Such a twat.

edit: can someone add the poll, I clicked the wrong button! Cheers

Stand up if you can score a goal. In fact stand up if you can take a set piece. My word, if anyone wants to know the definition of 'wasteful' just watch back that game. Woeful finishing, absolutely terrible. Krul will get a lot of the praise but in truth most the shots were straight at him.

I missed the first half so I'm going to presume Kaboul and Sandro were brought on due to injuries, but Defoe shouldn't have come on. Game was crying out for Lamela ie someone who can work well in little space.

That said, we've been asking for creativity and entertainment, and we certainly made a lot of chances. Was a good watch at least though incredibly frustrating!

Soldado and Sandro were good, everyone else was average/shit.

AVB would have gotten a big fat 0 if i could be bothered to do scores.

Not playing a holding midfielder.
Not playing Lamela
Not playing our best defender.
Bringing on fucking DEFOE and playing him alongside Soldado.

Absolute shambles.

Lamela not coming on and that waste of fucking space getting game time up top is disgraceful and offensive.

Who is that? Naughton? Can't be Kaboul because he has only recently come back from injury and wasnt that great against Sheriff

Friedel - 6 - Meh.

Walker - 7 - Got forward well and compensated for Andros being awful.

Dawson - 5 - Could have done a lot better during the 1st half, not much to do in the 2nd.

Chiriches - 6 - Saved us going 1 down earlier than it happened.

Vertonghen - 7 - Like Walker got forward well and defensively solid.

Paulinho - 6 - Great in the 2nd half, not up to scratch in the 2nd.

Dembele - 1 - Awful.

Townsend - 3 - Predictable as ever, needs to finally be dropped.

Eriksen - 7 - Decent. Not really much else to say.

Gylfi - 5 - Did nothing.

Soldado - 6 - Did well to make space, but rarely got the service again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sandro - 10 - Changed the game our way, if he started we would have won.

Kaboul - 8 - Not much to do but did it well.

Defoe - 1 - Killed our momentum, just go away

I don't think I can give Eriksen an 8. He did well today but had many moments where he switched off and really should've scored. I'd have gone with a 7.

Also, would've given a 7 to Soldado. He worked hard and had some very good touches, particularly early on when he was playing nice little one touch passes. Very unlucky not to score with the flick-on header. Let down by a couple of poor half chances at goal.

Sandro was indeed immense when he came on, I do think he needs to start over Dembele.

Weird. I know there's supposed to be some 5 day rest rule after a concussion...but he didn't have a concussion. Whatever bullshit it was it's just cost us potentially 3 points.

Friedel - 6.5 - Goal is not his fault, did pretty well every other time he was called upon.

Walker - 6.5 - Getting better, runs forward were more meaningful/timed and hard to pick out an end product with 10 men in the box.
Chiriches - 6.5 - Pretty good, like him a lot, but I still think he is due a huge blunder/slipup eventually.
Dawson - 4.5 - Didn't track Remy on the goal, slow throughout in crucial times, stupid stupid tackle at the end to completely kill off any momentum.
Vertonghen - 6.5 - Not a LB so not criticizing as much, decent to good going forwards and back. Classy player.

Dembele - 4.5 - Looked so slow and AVB got it all wrong making him the box to box player in the 1H and Paulinho the DM...Not totally his fault but nonetheless, one of his poorest game as a Spurs player.
Paulinho - 4 1H, 6.5 2H - Looked much better in his natural position of box to box MF in the second half but so poor in the first half as the DM, not sure how he plays there for Brazil.

Sigurdsson - 4.5 - I'm sorry but he just doesn't offer anything. I like him, I really do, but shouldn't be starting.
Eriksen - 7.5 - Mixed game but big improvement...was playing brilliant one moment then far too casual the next. Still, that's the player we signed from Ajax. Needs to start and continue this.
Townsend - 4 - Worst game of the season from him, stupid/poor shooting, headless dribbling, too predictable. Had 3 on him to be fair but in that case realize there's 2 men open elsewhere as a result and pass/cross it.

Soldado - 6.5 - Didn't really have any great clear cut chances like vs Villa, but holdup play was good, linked up well in attack, won some fouls.

Kaboul - 7 - Strong/solid. Not sure why he isn't starting if he can play (AVB?...)
Sandro - 8 - Beast, won everything.
Defoe - 2.5 - Not even gonna bother. Just WTF Andre, WTF. Cup player at this point.

AVB - 2.5 - Poor decisions throughout.

Nonetheless, we were unlucky not to at the very least get a point, and on another day without Krul having the game of his season, would have been 2/3/4-1.

Kaboul is our best defender in my eyes. He was OK against Sheriff, regardless, he's a better option than Dawson.
