Last time I went to watch our U21 play Chelsea, all the fans were bunched together, most of the dads taking their kids - all pretty nice more than anything.

I'll go to the league game though.
It's a shame it can't be like that when the senior premier league sides play, I believe that's how football should be.

For those of us who can't keep up with the youth squads, is there anyone in particular we should be keeping an eye on tonight? Do any of the lads playing tonight have a chance of seeing a bit of first team football next season?

Looking forward to this, it's been way too long since I've seen our youngsters play.

closest one tonight will be Onomah who has already made his debut but ones to look out for are Kyle Walker-Peters, Azzaoui, Carter-Vickers

You can make your own mind up tonight! I will be looking for players who are EPL or Championship class. Judging by the reviews in the youth thread we have maybe 3. If one of those is good enough for Spurs I will be over the moon. I don't think you have to see too much of a player to judge whether they are "good enough." Whether or not they make it has more to do with attitude than ability.
The little I have seen of Onomah-he has impressed me.

i think most are in agreement as for the ones to look out for as @Romulus said. anyway, here's my brief thoughts:

kyle walker-peters (ENG/17) - right back, smallish but very quick and attacks both inside and outside, playing style more dani alves than his namesake.

cameron carter-vickers (USA/17) - centre back. already built like a senior player, physical and aggressive but cool and composed at the same time, plays out from the back. playing style(but whisper it quietly) = ledley king

josh onomah (ENG/17) - some will say attacking midfielder, for me, central midfielder. on the face of it you would thing powerful athletic player and whilst he does have those qualities, he has superb ability on the ball and moves more like a player much smaller. likes to drop deep and break through midfields either by using his ability to dribble with the ball or an impressive passing range. playing style has ben likened to paul pogba by many, if you've not seen much of pogba then maybe similar to dembele but with more purpose.

ismael azzaoui (BEL/17) - winger/attacking midfielder. our top scorer in the competition with six goals in four games. cuts in from the left onto his right, quick dribbler with good close control. play style similar to eden hazard.

marcus edwards (ENG/16) - attacking midfielder. tiny but all the talent in the world, the ball sticks to his feet. vision, creativity, ingenuity, dribbles with intent and at pace. as crazy as it sounds, his game is messi-esque.

it's difficult to predict with players at this age but if i had to then the two most likely to make it would be carter-vickers and onomah but then that could be because their stature is closer to that needed of a senior player than the other three. i have high hopes for all of them though and even those not named could come through as well as they all develop at different rates. the main point though is that the players we've had come through the academy recently aren't just a one off.

Yes - very, very talented but I know I'm not the only one concerned about his attitude. Unlike the rest of our youth teamers he isn't one to go in for 50/50 challenges, chase down the opposition defenders, or pass when he has any kind of chance to shoot. That being said it can all be worked on and developed, whilst his actual ability is simply tremendous for such a young player.

Sometimes it's there mental make up which makes them great.

are they really all going to start tonight?

I'd be very surprised to see Marcus Edwards start - he's still in the U16 (schoolboy) age group, he won't even be considered a first-year scholar until next season, he's just had some off playing time along with Kaziah Sterling due to how talented they are. He'll either come off the bench or not play at all considering the national media exposure we'll have tonight with the game on ITV4.

Does anyone have an idea of how we compare to Chelsea, if only on paper? Who would someone reasonably informed on both sides have as favourites over two legs?

I think most neutrals would rate Chelsea as favourites for this. Very good team which is running away with the U18 academy league south. They also have an excellent recent record in the FAYC. So even though we do have some exceptional prospects, those who haven't followed the youth teams much shouldn't be disappointed if we lose this tie or don't look as impressive as you'd hoped. It will simply be because we are up against another team with exceptional players. One who has impressed me for them is Isaiah Brown, who they poached off West Brom as a 16 year old. Very fast winger / wide forward with good end product.

Should be a high quality game, though, between two of the strongest clubs at academy level in England.

chelsea are favs. their record over the past few years at this level is unmatched, we've been competitive with them though and seem to be catching up. the thing is, a successful youth team doesn't equal successfully producing players for first team football, that's been the main criticism aimed at chelsea, that they've been building youth teams to win whilst we're building youth teams in the hope of progressing them into senior football. the two standouts for chelsea tonight will probably be jeremie boga and isaiah brown, they are 18 though whereas most of the other lads on show will probably be 17 and a year at this age makes quite a difference.

Is Harry Winks too old?

I was about to say that he is.

But I've just looked it up and it turns out that he isn't actually too old. He turned 19 on 2nd February of this year. And the upper age limit for FAYC qualification is 18 as of 31st August of the season in question.

So, unless I've misunderstood something, he does qualify. But I guess that the club aren't so desperate to win the FAYC as to field players who have already graduated from the academy.

yeah, he's 19. currently playing well in the u21s, would imagine he will get a loan next season unless poch thinks he could play now - which i imagine is unlikely.

See my post above. I think the answer is actually "Nah"!!

(i) Only those players are eligible to take part who have reached the age of 15 years by
midnight on 31 August of the current season and not reached the age of 18 years as at
midnight on 31 August of the current season. (For season 2008-09, a player must have
been born on or after 1 September 1990 and on or before 1 September 1993).

winks was already 18(and a half) by then.

Actually, scrap that.

The wiki page for the FAYC was poorly written. Having looked on the actual FA pdf, it turns out that at the upper end of the age range, a player has to be below the age of 18 on 31st Aug of the season in question.
