So, gp, what are you trying to argue here? His crosses aren't good enough?

I'm arguing that a good assist number doesn't automatically mean that someone's good at crossing, as a few people have claimed in this thread.

I generally pick apart people's ways of arguing rather than their actual arguments, I find :-|

It depends on so much though. For a start, what is actually meant by an assist. Is it just that he had the last touch before goalscorer? We don't know (off the top of our heads, unless you do) how any of these goals were scored, and we don't know how many assists were created by all these players which didn't end up as goals through no fault of the assisting players.

Here's aquestion based around this point..

Who was credited with the assist for Gilberto's goal on Sunday?

Was it Chimbonda for passing the ball in or was it Lennon for the step over taking the defender out of the game?

I would say it was probably Chimbonda because he made the last pass from which Gilberto scored, but surely it should be Lennon as although he never touched the ball he created the opening?

you see for me Hudd gets the assist for Berba's pen at wembley as he touched it last for Spurs - ditto JJ for woody's goal cos Cech ain't having it :)

Exactly. Similar instances could have occured for most of his or other players' assists, and likewise there could be a large number missing from their assists that deserve to be counted.

I think lennons inconsistent crossing is probably down to the fact that he was playing as a striker in his youth.

Cool - my question wasn't meant in a threatening way, just in case you thought so. It was in fact a plain question as to what route you were on.

This is of course a very salient point - however, as Legend10 said [that's twice in one day I've agreed with him, I must be ageing dreadfully  ], Lennon has definitely been more of a menace (with less minutes on the pitch than some of his contemporaries) and put in some great crosses only for strikers to make a meal of the finish or to not be in a better position.

I think his crossing has definitely improved. It simply must have done by just pure exposure to Premiership football. I'd be worried if it didn't. And it hasn't.

He's a major threat, and when we finally balance ourselves up a bit, I think we'll see that more.

We've had a lot of joy from the Malbranque wing, as people have doubled up on Lennon seeing that wing as one of our main threats - which is why I'm a big fan of wing-switching, but that's for another thread - but the day our wing threat is matching on both flanks is a day to behold our attacking play. And Lennon in full flight and crossing glory. :-D

Terribly poetic today, I must be going soft in the middle.

Jest compared Lennon with Hleb who scum fans wank over and they have both scored the same amount of goals but lennon has assisted more. Thats something to throw back at them!

Not last season, a lot of them didn't. He was getting the same kind of stick on Arsenal-Mania that Ghaly got on here, for similar reasons.

I was going to say, I was under the impression that Arsenal fans don't really rate Hleb that much

who cares about assists? I'd like to see some bloody crosses a la Hutton's from Sunday. When did Berba (if ever) head a goal from a Lennon cross? Bloody assists my arse...

Lennon can tear defenses apart with his pace and direct play and he's distribution has improved allot of recent times.

He's a great player and one we should all get behind and support instead of having pointless debates about his supposed lack of ability.

Lennon is, for me at least, a big part of the future of this club.

Lennon's all round game has come on a lot this season. His tracking back and pace has got us out of many a potentially dangerous situation.

He's done really well effort wise since Ramos took over. He works hard for the team now when we don't have the ball. But it is whithout question that his crossing needs to improve greatly. For a player like Lennon who gets into so many great positions he should create a lot more than he does. I'd like to see him run into the box more as well, where he can pick out a man with a pass rather than a cross. It seems like he knows he has trouble crossing the ball and just hits it aimlesly across goal in a bit of a panic, normaly about a foot high and cut out by the first man. I'm a big fan of Lennon and hope he has a big future at the club, but crossing is a major fault in his game. Lets hope he sorts it.

I think some of us are forgetting that SWP and Bentley are both older (six years older, in SWP's case) and more experienced. It was only last season that people really started noticing Bentley. Last season Lennon's progress was badly disrupted by various injuries, too. It's absolutely ridiculous to claim that he won't get better.

Do we really have to have this 'Shit Player of the Week' mentality?

Its weird that so many people are calling for us to sign players like Diego Capel and then bashing Lennon.

I'm not sure what people will be expecting from Capel if we sign him but he is very raw and inexperienced and at this stage in his career he is not at the same level of lennon.

Sometimes we don't always appreciate what we have.
