Should it be considered a massive failure if Liverpool finish above us this season?

Liverpool are genuine title contenders we are not we are a 5th or 6th placed club but on an exceptional season could make 4th.
As frustrated as this may sound it is the reality so any venture into the CL has to be seen as a bonus rather than an expectation.

Yes, agree with many sentiments above.

Liverpool (at the moment) have a very good manager who has them playing exceptional football and is getting the best out of players who did not excel last term (e.g. Firminho, Lovren) and made excellent summer signings, the pick of the bunch being Sadio Mané (who at £34m at the time looked a massive overpayment, until we signed Sissoko for £30m).

Whether they can keep this up all season is obviously an unknown, but they've coped well without Sturridge (intermittently) and Coutinho.

We've had our injury issues this term, losing all three of our most key players (Hugo, Toby and Harry Kane) and had the added pressures of playing in the Champions' League, so the fact that we're there or thereabouts is one positive. They have a bigger profile still than us, given their more recent big trophy success and the financial backing to push on (without the expense of a new stadium). It would be no shock if they finished above us.

No, we shouldn't be meassuring ourselves against what others achieve.

I personally still see last season as a success, 3rd place, one of the highest GD in my memory and loved watching us swarm over teams and produce some of the best collective team play I've seen from a Spurs side. This is an improvement on previous seasons and should be appluaded yet somehow people see it as a failure because we fnished behind Leciester & Scum.

We can only influence what we do and all the time we're progressing and moving forward as a club then I'm happy (y)

The one thing about last year is that when we found ourselves in a title race with the excitement and everything that goes with it, it almost seemed a bit of an anti climax finishing third which in itself was a great achievement despite the late collapse.
I don't know how long or even if we are to see us getting that chance to challenge for the title, but it was one of the most memorable we have had for many a year that cannot be in doubt.
And yet so far this season i have yet to feel that buzz of last time out, although having been to a few games so far I don't feel anything is about to happen as maybe the team as not yet hit top gear they have mostly played within themselves to date.

How about we hang fire until after Sunday's match at Watford, six points up for grabs between now and then while
Liverpool get to play Man City at Anfield.

Could be a point in it by then if all goes well.

The half way stage in this campaign with 57 more points up for grabs.

Massive failure? No. Disappointed that I have to listen to those wankers, yes. They are insufferable already.

No.

They have pressed consistently since the start of the season from kick-off to final whistle (granted, they haven't had Euro footy). They are super dynamic in their final third play, take risks in the final third and constantly move for each other in the final third, pulling defenders around, making space and playing clever football in general, in that zone.

In other words - they have gone for it.

We've been too conservative and have lacked ideas, where they have been adventurous and creative.

If we maintain our respective modes of play then I will have no complaints if they finish above us.

Apart from the fact they're insufferable xxxxs, of course. But that's a standard gripe.

And we both know who's fault that is lol.

It will be a bigger failure if we fail to get top 4 unless we win the Europa league.

I don't mind finishing behind them.
I do mind the possibility of them winning the league.

Their fans and the heavily Liverpool biased media would would be fucking insufferable.

No. Liverpool should be finishing ahead of us, to be honest. Its quite frankly unbelievable that they've only finished ahead of us once the last 7 or so years. They have a bigger profile and much more resources at their disposal. Not to mention the clear favortism toward them by the influential media. This season, they dont have Europe(last time they werent in Europe, they finished 2nd and probably could have won the title if they hadnt blown a 3-0 lead vs Palace, and Gerrard hadnt slipped up vs Chelsea gifting them an easy goal), have a better attack than us and, IMO, have one of the best managers in football.

IMO, we have to spend less time worrying about other clubs. We need to focus on our own club here. This is a massive moment for the club. It is absolutely imperative that we achieve CL qualification again. There are 2 avenues available to do so but the squad has to improve. The club cannot afford to fuck this up. A quality addition is needed, IMO. The added revenue of CL is crucial for the stadium and we need to keep this squad largely in tact. This season and next is absolutely crucial that we qualify for Champions League, IMO. The new stadium, IMO, wont be a big enough draw to keep this team in tact. CL in the new stadium would be.

no body cares how much you spend on wages, how much who was paid for. yes you might have bragging rights. yes you might say OH IF WE SPENT JUST AS MUCH blah blah blah, truth is people only say that because it makes themselves feel better. in the end champions are champions, losers are losers.

klopp is the better coach but not that much better than poch. if we spend as much i think we can be just as good. in driving sense, klopp is the better driver with a much faster car. we might be having a driver that is of similar level but if we dont have a car thats just as fast then we will always lose 9 times outta 10. because it just isnt a fair game. once in a blue moon there will be a season where every fast car crashes and some black horse wins (aka last season), but are you willing to just bet on that?

we are not playing the game on a level playing field so its either we suck up and pay up, or just hope for the best for an upset. thats just the reality of it

They're fairly quiet now. I grew up in the 80s, when everyone in my class bar two of us supported Liverpool. And they still do; 30-somenthings who every few years pop up with stories about how amazing they are. But back then, it was a daily haunt.
