The reason I say Liverpool is because out of all the sides in this league it's them that we have really been competing with over the last 6-7 seasons for 5th place, three times we have broken into the top four in that time, once denied by Chelsea, once finishing third and once finishing fourth and actually qualifying.
In comparison Liverpool have finished 2nd (with Suarez who is, in my opinion, world class) and this was the only time in that period they qualified for the CL, they have finished above us once in 6 seasons now, just once.
Now, I have to ask a serious question, we all know what happened last season with Leicester, such a thing only happens once in a blue moon, it's completely random, unlikely to happen again for a long time, however with Liverpool you can see how bad they have been in recent seasons, it's been a complete clusterfuck for them, they haven't even got a very decent squad in my opinion, they have some great forward players but have an awful defensive unit and yet somehow they are currently sitting 7 points ahead of us in 2nd, the question I am going to ask is this, if Liverpool were to finish ahead of us this season or actually win the league (please just no, please don't let that happen) then should we be concerned?
I mean, like I said earlier, they are essentially our direct competition for the 5th/4th place we are more often than not likely to occupy given the spending of the other sides in this league over the long term and yet despite all their problems and issues and despite us finishing above them for years now and seemingly being miles ahead of them last season they somehow look a much better unit than us now.
Is it too early to make this judgement? My mind is telling me yes because it's early in the season and I personally think they will get found out and start hitting a bad patch of form and will spiral out from there, but I said that last season about Leicester and look what happened, only difference being here is that if Liverpool won it, that would be disastrous for us, they are already a huge club in terms of world appeal, if they won the PL and got back into the CL the likelihood of them leaving it any time soon would be minimal, especially with Klopp in charge.
Which brings me to my next question, what is it exactly that has turned their fortunes around so much and apparently so fast? The manager is the only thing I can think of and it's him that worries me the most for the following reason.
I think he is better than Poch. I know this is going to catch some hate but I really do believe he is and I think the fact he has turned them around so fast in such a short period of time from the clusterfuck they were before is quite impressive.
Despite all our managerial changes and problems at spurs we were always around 5th, I mean we even finished above pool with AVB and Sherwood, it took Poch two seasons to have us in a title race, which in itself is impressive but last season the quality of the league was quite shocking and I personally feel like it flattered us, however, regardless of that we have shown slight signs of regression in terms of performances this season in my opinion and Liverpool have so far shown large signs of progression.
I mean, in his second season, if things stay as they are now, Klopp would have taken pool from 8th to 2nd, that's a six place swing, if we take Poch's best placed finish with us, which would be third now, that would represent a two place swing at best, not only that but Poch hasn't even beaten our best league points total of 72 yet.
I am not trying to drill Poch down, I still believe he is the best manager we have had in recent years and honestly is the best we are likely to get at this current time, the players believe in him that much is evident with all the recent signings of contracts and he is dedicated to the club from what I can tell so that is all good with me, I just want to make it clear, I am NOT saying I want him to be gone or sacked or anything of that nature, I am happy with Poch at our club, I just believe that if Klopp actually achieves a second place finish with pool this year then that would be a hugely impressive achievement given how they have been in recent seasons and would, in my opinion represent a real failure on our part.
Like I said though, this is all early days so far, Liverpool could likely regress, we could likely hit great form again and smash our points total for this season and all will be well in the world, it's really too early to say anything right now, but my question remains, should it be considered a failure on part of our players and management if Liverpool finish above us?
I just want to add, that I fucking hate Liverpool and this post may be fuelled by an underlying fear of seeing those absolute bellends finishing above us again.
