Or even simpler, don't stop the game for substitutions.

The simple solution for time wasting is clock that stops when the ball isn’t in play. Rugby, Basketball, NHL and NFL all manage fine with this.

I don’t get why football is so archaic when it comes to time keeping. The refs have far too much leeway to end the game early or let it carry on.

Again it boils down to the refs being either incompetent or crooked. Quite often we are now seeing five or six minute delays due to VAR, then come the end of the game, the fourth official holds up a board with 3 minutes on it.

Take it out of the refs hands and it is one less thing they need to worry about, and one less thing they can control in the game.

In our match yesterday the ref blew for half time bang on the 45. But aren't they supposed to add a minute for a goal scored?

Agree completely. The time keeping is absolutely farcical. Despite all the supposed rules it far too often seems to just come down to some arbitrary number that the 4th official has made up out of thin air.

It’s almost like they want to give some teams the best chance to score the goal they need. ?
