TO be fair, if he is good enough to play for BRazil at left back, then he is good enough for us.

I don't blame him for last night, I blame the management, it was clear he lacked match fitness, too much of an important game to give a player his debut, especially when he has been out of hte game for 3 months!!!

I posted my thoughts on Juande's gameplan and how much it revolved around Gilberto here:
http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=28432

Let's get some perspective. Gilberto has effectively replaced Roberto Carlos as Brazil's LB, and is by all accounts a very cultured and composed player with a sweet left foot. Last night, he started with his socks halfway down his calves, and looked throughout as if he was off the pace and lacking in match fitness and confidence.

If he was in tears after the game and apologizing to his teammates and coaches, then I respect him. That means he's a proper professional and man. We desperately need some left-footed class on the left flank. Hopefully, we can get Gilberto to somewhere near his true level - Brazil's LB - in the next couple of games, because without some class down our left flank it'll be much harder for us to have further success this season.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I think he looked extremely nervous and anxious.

An unfortunate debut but let's not judge him on one appearance. He wasn't the only one last night playing badly.

I agree with you Flatters...I know he made a massive mistake and also gave away a free kick in a bad position, but thought he looked cultured and attacking. I hope he learned from last night and will torment the Spammers this weekend. Dont know who said he was lucky to stay on the pitch...that was Chimbonda who again looked rash with some of his his challenges. Overall it was a poor game for all except our two central defenders who can do no wrong for me

The only positive to take from Gilberto's performance last night is that he surely could not play any worse than that.

Onwards and upwards hopefully.

Gilberto's injury is supposedly to his calf muscle. It looked to me as if he was playing without sock ties (hence his socks being halfway down his calves from kickoff) which suggests that he wanted to get as much bloodflow to his calves as possible.

I could be talking bollox, and I welcome any physios etc setting me straight here...

Went last night and thought he made some nice tidy passes, but would agree he looks more suited to a LM role rather than LB

Ramos has too take the rap for playing the guy in such a high profile game for us. Gilberto clearly looked short of sharpness and match fitness. Was a bad decision and the first I have seen him make thus far.
Who would you have played there then?

Chimbonda with no left foot who has been next to useless there? (I rate him as a right back but to me he's a liability at left back who offers no attacking threat).

Gilberto is a proven left footed left back - the only fit one we have at the moment. I can't think of a single reason why he shouldn't have played.

King and Woody have had injury problems recently but I don't see anyone on here questioning their places.

I think he just did it to look cool like Davids did.

From the BBC:

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos refused to blame new signing Gilberto for the 1-0 Uefa Cup loss to PSV Eindhoven.

Gilberto endured a torrid debut on Thursday, losing the ball for Jefferson Farfan's winner and receiving a caution before being substituted at half-time.
"I didn't substitute him because he made a mistake - it was because he has had a calf injury and has not got his rhythm," said Ramos.
"He needs to play many more games, that's why I took him off."
Gilberto joined Tottenham from Hertha Berlin for a reported £1.9m in January.
The Brazil international's move was initially in doubt because of problems with his medical and injury had prevented him from playing until Thursday's last 16 first-leg tie.
"Every football player makes mistakes," said Ramos.
"What we have to do now is support him and help him to try to recover his best level. We're not going to blame him for the defeat."

Ramos won the Uefa Cup with Sevilla in 2006 and 2007 but his Tottenham side, which may be without Jermaine Jenas for a spell after the midfielder twisted an ankle, face an uphill task if they are to reach the quarter-finals.
The Spaniard selected his strongest starting line-up against PSV but that could not prevent a second successive defeat since Tottenham's Carling Cup triumph, following on from the 4-1 loss at Birmingham last weekend.
"It's true we had our best starting XI but we still under-performed," Ramos added. "I've been quite disappointed with that.
"We had our best players on the pitch but PSV were the better team.
"You could say it was a reality check, in the matches against Birmingham and PSV we have not played as well as we could have.
"If we want to continue in this competition we have to improve our performances or we will be out."
Spurs assistant boss Gus Poyet insists Tottenham can overturn their deficit in the Philips Stadion on Wednesday 12 March in the second leg.
"It'll be a completely different story over there. We are good enough to go there and win 2-0, no doubt about it," said the Uruguayan. "PSV were very organised, defended deep and passed the ball well - everything we expected of them - but this tie is not over."

Point is mate that he can see these players in training and can see if he's match sharp or not. Gilberto was CLEARLY not. I would have played Lee ahead of him. I'm not Lee's biggest fan but he, I would presume, is match fit atleast. It looks as though Ramos really dosent like Lee though and has put Gilberto, Chimbonda and O'hara ahead of him so far. I think Lee's days are numbered.

This is an entirely fair point. Ramos and Alvarez are the ones seeing and assessing Gilberto in training.

But Juande is a bold coach. And I suspect he was so desperate to get a genuine left-footed threat down our left flank that he took the chance that Gilberto could give us a good sixty minutes. The fact that Gilberto is highly experienced must also have been a factor in that decision. But I'm sure Ramos knew it was a big risk, just as playing Ledley without any match practice has been a big risk throughout the season.

Ramos rolled the dice and they didn't fall kindly.

However, I do agree that I think Lee could have done a job for us last night at LB, just as I'd have preferred to see Tainio next to Jenas. Ramos is an outstanding coach, but he doesn't seem to rate Lee as a LB or Teemu as a CM (despite his outstanding CM performance against the Scum).

I think Gilberto will come good, but he did look like a typical Brazilian full back - not so good with the defensive aspect of the game.

The mistake was horrendous, but apart from that he looked ok. Booking was cynical but it had to be done. Hopefulyl with matches he can become good.

I don't have a clue.....but it would be interesting to know who of our players throughout history have made their debuts in a game like this.....and after three months out injured.

Usually not the kind of game a player gets their debut...is it?
