No thread on Gilberto yet?!

I think he played pretty well. Ok, he made a bad mistake, but as Gus has said, mistakes happens to all the best players, and unfortunately for Gilberto it cost us a goal.

Bar that error though, I think he looked good. Was never really tested defensively, but on the ball he looked very comfortable and assured, and was linking up and passing the ball well.

As long as we give him the Kaboul treatment and make sure he just gets rid of it in dangerous positions, I think he's gonna be good for us.

I think he made one of the worst debutes Ive seen, he was good for about 15mins in. I do belive however we should give him time. But in honesty, when we brought him I didnt expect much of him and I still retain that view. I will however be delighted if he turns out to be a class act

I honestly think that he gave a decent performance on thurs, and gave us something extra on the left hand side which we've missed without Bale there, I just hope the fans don't turn against him like they did Steed last year.

He looks, at first glance (and that's all it was, just a glance), like a classic Spurs full back: good with the ball at his feet and going forward, but lacksidasical at the back. The typical kind of defender we're linked with: "Can play left back or left midfield." The amount of times I've seen that in the Spurs site bumpf.

But we all knew that that was the way Ramos was going to take it, he loves his attacking full backs. Let's give the guy time, he looked surprisingly nippy for his age and seemed to have a decent cross. He could be a real asset.

It was a bad mistake but we should give Gilberto a few more games before we crucify him.

What did concern me was his lack of pace. I couldn't understand the tactic of leaving him as the last defender when Woodgate and King went up for set plays. He looks extremely vulnerable against pace. Hope it was the calf injury that was slowing him but I doubt it.

I think it definitely was, as I actually think to start with he looked fast back and forward on the flank. He deteriorated as the half went out.

So was Lennon Malbraque Zokora Robinson Huddletone, the guy made a mistake, so do all players, i think people should be focusing a little more on the limited capabilities of our midfield, but like most spurs fans we choose to sit in front of our computers and slag a player of, sorry but the sooner people relise that WE ARE NOT GOING TO CHALLENGE THE TOP FOUR WITH OUR MIDFIELD THE BETTER

OMG you are SOOO right. Why didn't anyone else think of this?

Damn that Comolli for not buying Ronaldo, Quaresma, Anderson & Sneijder. Damn him to HELL!!!

I mean after all, we are clearly the most attractive prospect for the worlds greatest CMs, it's just a case of putting in a bid, surely?

Scarcasm aside, if you compare the first team signings Comolli has made along with the sums of money spent on these with that made by other clubs in similar postions in terms of attracting players you could make an arguement to suggest he has not done the best he could with the money spent.

No we/he cannot buy the greatest players on the planet because we do not have champions league football to offer and bigger clubs will want them.

However if you think we beat Sevilla (uefa cup winners and CL team) to the signing of Prince Boateng, yet they went on to sign Keita for less money who has been a huge hit for them and made an instant impact on their first time.

In contrast Boateng has rarely made it into our first team and made little impact as and when he has.

Now this is just one example that springs to mind, how many other lesser known players are there that should/could be snapped up and come in to make a positive impact on our team?

Arsenal and Wenger have done such business time and time again. Comolli has spent alot of money and many of his signings have not had the desired impact on the first team.

Gilberto has 4 pages to himself? It was his debut and he made a mistake, lets move on. This thread seems to be more about us challenging for the top 4 and I reckon that'll take a few years yet.

It wasnt as bad a debut as Eric Thorstvedt.

Gilberto showed some promise going forward, he just got caught on his heels a couple of times defensively (one of which cost us the goal).

He is still an international defender, for Brazil no less, give him sometime to settle in and then we can talk about whether he is good enough or not.

Thursday night was unfortunate for him, with the benefit of hindesight it was probaly the wrong decision to play him (considering the lack of recent football he had played)

However as said previously, he was used to the pace of European football so the logic to play him was not unfounded (it just never worked)

There is nothing to suggest he will not go on to be a good addition to our team and or squad... HE HAS ONLY PLAYED 45 MINS FOR US SO FAR

I think he looked fairly confident on the ball (considering not played for 3 months).
Would like to see him paired with O'hara on the left.
Not a great debut, but he definitely needs to pull his socks up (in both senses of the word)

True that.

Or indeed another defender who scored an own goal, was sent off and put in one of the worst hours football I've ever seen on his debut for Real Madrid after also only getting a game after several weeks due to injury.

Not sure what became of him...

I think I remember that guy. Recently voted worst signing ever in Spain....

Can't for the life of me think of his name... probably driving a milk float somewhere by now!

Great call!

Jonathan Woodgate was always a Rolls Royce of a CB.

Just as Gilberto is a classic Brazilian international LB - with all that implies. There has been some first class tosh written about Gilberto on these boards in the last few days...

What does that mean? C Ronaldo has an immense debut - by that logic, he should be crap now?

9 times out of 10 bad starts = bad players :p.

Well, i'm just a pesimist so i hope I'm wrong !! Hope he improves quick time.

Gilberto had a shocker on his debut however:

He is an international full back for Brazil

He has just come back from injury

It was his first game for us.

He will improve - don't jump on his back because of one mistake.

dynamoSpurs - I can only assume you didn't get Bill Oddie's reference, to which I was replying.

Jonathan Woodgate made his debut for Real Madrid after a long injury lay off and managed both to score an own goal and get sent off. Obviously, he was therefore a rubbish player for all time. (That's irony, btw.)

If you read the whole thread, my opinion on Gilberto's debut is abundantly clear.

As you almost invariably are, the odds are that you won't break the habit this time.

Is that a fact yeah?

I would say its absolutely unbelievable that people are writing off a player after one game, let alone someone who's got over 20 caps for Brasil, but then again, this is Spurs Community, so I'd expect nothing less.
