Most wide players prefer playing on their wrong side these days - including our last 3 LMs before Bale (Krancjar, Modric and Malbraque - all right footers who far prefer playing on the left).

Dan, I don't think it is that straightforward....you do get right footers going left but not as many left footers going right side. Only 15% - 20% of players are naturally left sided.....so lefties generally play there. Right siders get more of a look in because of the shortage of lefties:) I am involved with grading for a couple of hundred 16-18 year old players every year for state sides and this is what I tend to see. Players putting their hand up to go left always have an advantage in being picked in representative sides for this reason. I don't claim to know much about Falque but was just passing comment on what I saw him doing last night. If he can play both sides he will get EL time this year I would imagine.

I see what you are saying. But at the top levels where margins are so fine, players usually play in their preferred/best position.

Messi, Hulk, Lavezzi, Bryan Ruiz, Loic Remy, even Gio - just a few examples of right footers who prefer to play on the left, so they can cut in.

In the great Spurs team of the early 60s, Cliff Jones, a natural right-footer, would either play on the right (with Dyson on the left) or left (with Medwin on the right). In one season he played league 18 games on each flank. In that season he scored 18 goals, all of which came when he started on the left wing. Probably just a coincidence (as the Spurs wingers would often switch flanks during a game) but some right footers do enjoy playing on the 'wrong' flank where they can cut in and shoot.

of course we need cover for those players, thats a no brainer

but what has any of what you said got to do with the OP ?

You asked why we got this guy, you agree it is for cover: a "no brainer". Were hardly going to get a player like charles nzogbia as cover so weve used the scouting network to find a talented player who will work hard for a chance and be satisfied with a few games here and there. Those are few and far between.

that's what the last bit had to do with your question.

The rest was just bollocks that I made up using quotes from Othello.

Some people are to quick to judge. Did you see the way he instantly took the ball down second half prior to his chance on goal? He has class and its hard to play in a mish mash team.

This.

I thought he looked like a really tidy little player, very impressive.

Makes you think: How poor are they that have not patience?

This thread is monstrous, however it was his dream, I suppose. But this denoted a foregone conclusion. And this may help to thicken other proofs that do demonstrate thinly that we'd have been better off putting money in Juve's purse. The pity of it.

Plus, more aptly, The Point of this signing is to cover for the fact that we do actually need wide players in the cups in order to save Bale, Lennon and Kranjcar who will risk serious injury if they play in these matches.

You missed a reference to the green-eyed monster.

Loved your opening line. So apt but lost on people here.

I think that 17th in Segunda (playing at a home stadium with a capacity of 5000) is pretty much on a par with League 1. Despite being a regular starter for Villarreal B last season, they opted not to take up their option to buy him.

I thought that his signing was odd but I wouldn't write him off after a single performance.

Ah sorry, I didn't realise the capacity of the ground was a guaranteed representation of the standard of football.....

Does that mean Botafogo are play at a higher level than us

Of course I don't but you seem to equate the Segunda with the Championship over here. It is nothing like as competitive with the 'B' teams being made up of largely of academy players.

Villarreal B are a completely different squad to Villarreal. Imagine us fielding a B team excluding the 25 who are registered to play in the EPL (i.e a weaker team than turned out last night). That is the equivalent level and it definitely isn't Championship standard.

Thought he looked a good player, personally. He looked like the kind of player who would benefit hugely from some cohesion in the final third. He looks like a Mata type of player, i.e not going to beat 10 men or do 100 stepovers, but good passing and moving, excellent close control and seems to hit the ball very sweetly. I was impressed. He will see league action this year.

Yeah, I agree it's probably not as strong, but it's not miles off.....there are only two B teams in it this year, then you have Valladolid, Celta Vigo, Deportivo, big clubs from big cities on a par with your Forest's, Leicesters, and Coventry's of the world. And better than West Ham :)

It amazes me how some people can watch one game involving a guy who has never played with us before and is young, also in an intimidating atmosphere - then decide based on that performance (which I thought was decent anyway) and that's the player written off as useless. Really stunning.. and makes me despair at the thought of being a young player trying to do his best and with that sort of attitude coming from some supporters, the OP should be ashamed of himself.

I thought he was one of the best performers in that match. Looks promising. Stupid thread.

Careful...you're one step away from saying that Falque is in fact Keith Palmer.

That's actually his favoured position apparently (although more in a 4-5-1/4-3-3 than a 4-4-2).

Most wide players prefer playing on their wrong side these days - including our last 3 LMs before Bale (Krancjar, Modric and Malbraque - all right footers who far prefer playing on the left).

Having wingers who go on the outside (and away from play) like Bale and Lennon do is increasingly rare.

Disagree - wingers who play on the 'wrong' side are the exception not the rule. Ribery and Robben are examples - Robben in particular as he's possibly the most one-footed player in international football

You do get a few right-footed players at LW purely because only 1 in 10 footballers is a left-footer

oh and

Malbranque - not a wide player
Modric - not a wide player
Kranky - not a wide player (unless you mean fat)

Malbranque played LW (or should I say in a 5 yard area left of the centre circle) for us because we failed to sign an actual left winger or ANY winger other than Lennon for years

I think generally the idea of having out and out wide players is in decline.

United have Nani, Valencia and Young who all nominally play on the wing but basically float around alot and cut inside alot of the time. Similarly City have Nasri and Silva etc etc.

We are certainly one of very few clubs who have tended to play two out and out wingers and I've never really thought it's a good idea.

I actually thought he played fairly well, tried to get past people was good in possession held the ball well and released it well. Was quite impressed by him and it was his first game! I think we need to give him a chance

I think we should be more worried about our back up striker ie pav and how shit he is than getting on the back of a kid who showed some nice touches and passing in what was his first competitive game.
