Or Premier League players are just incredibly overpriced and not worth it when they don't have release clause/1 year contract/financial problems. So this isn't being cheap, it's being smart.
Premier league players are incredibly overpriced for sure. Smart teams will buy mostly overseas and spend big on homegrown quality which seems to be the city model...

Eze is very good and homegrown. Not someone we should baulk at for an extra £10m over an equivalent foreigner (Kudus etc.)

Yes we are smart and everyone else is wrong.
Other clubs are also going for Mount, Kovacic or Rice when they had 1 year contract left, Barnes and Soton/Leeds players when they got relegated or Mac Allister and Olise with some sort of release clause.

Caicedo will be going for more than Bellignham who is 2 years younger, better and proven on higher level lol.

not seen a great deal of Eze, but cant help but think what I have seen he is one of those who seems to flatter to deceive and looks good on a show reel but it doesn't really equate to much in goals/assists...and for 50M, money could be better spent elsewhere...

Have to admit if this was a player from another league, people (including me) would probably be even more in awe. In fairness a lot on this forum appreciate his talent but I've never personally really paid attention to the the guy. Looks extremely talented.

He’s a very very good player. And reminds me of the player we thought we were signing when we got dembele.

Then dembele showed that he was incredibly strong and his ability to beat players 1 on 1 became his main attributes as a box 2 box player.

Not saying Eze will play that role for us, but just that I see similarities between the two players

Eze was well on his way to becoming a superstar before he ruptured his Achilles in training in 2021.

Last season was when he finally looked to be back to his pre-injury self and he averaged a goal or assist every 0.48 matches. This in a largely struggling Palace team.

Some say you can’t read too much into preseason, but he has absolutely torn it up aswell.

Would be confident in saying that he is going to light up the league this season, whether it’s with us or at Palace.

Think it would be a matter of them securing a good fee with 2 years on his contract as reportedly he isn’t signing a new contract, plus he’s a CAA Base client like a number of our squad etc. so might be a matter of joining a lot of dots.
CAA Base FC - the game is about glory (and good agent relationships)

Great player who I wanted years ago but this would be classic Spurs, blowing a huge chunk of our budget on a player who whilst being great, doesn’t quite fit the system.

It cannot be emphasised enough how important the wide players are in Ange’s system and there are several traits they need to have if we want the system to function effectively and us to evolve and develop in to a top team. The wide players need to be:

1. Lightning quick, explosive acceleration. Preferably good top speed too.

2. Excellent close control dribblers, capable of beating players in tight spaces or in space.

3. This is really key, they must be 2 way dribblers, who are comfortable going both outside and inside at speed.

4. They must feel comfortable and natural out wide holding width, as this is key to creating space for the 8s and isolates the wide players to beat FBs.

There are a lot of similarities between the way we will want to play and how scum play. They have 2 perfect Ange style wide players.

Eze is a superb player who could become even better but he is not a natural wide player or a natural 2 way dribbler. He’s most comfortable in the exact same role Maddison and Gio will play for us.

So unless Ange feels he can turn him in to a proper wide player who can go both ways at his man and deliver cutbacks, low crosses or cut inside and shoot, then he is not the player we should go for. It would just be us going for a big name because he’s HG and we regret not going for him years ago, despite him not fitting what we actually need right now.

So again, I love Eze, think he’s a wonderful talent but I’m not sure he’s the right type of player we need right now. What we need is a natural, explosive wide player like Williams.

With the news this evening of Barca supposedly agreeing terms with Neymar for a potential free transfer or loan and them going back to Cancelo with the view to buying him I do wander if this means we have firmed up our interest in Fati.

Like his approach to the game - wanting to push forward at every opportunity; a positive football mindset …
I do recall talk of ‘allowing’ him to go from QPR to Palace and letting them gamble on a relative unknown; that we’d revisit if it worked for him etc. (Maybe I’ve made this up!?)

I like him, has a bit of everything and seems to make things happen. Powerful runner with the ball, can pick a pass and also takes a good set piece. Towards the end of the season grabbed a few goals to. Always looks pretty calm in possession and as though he has time on the ball which is a good sign.

Just wondering where he'd play for us though. Although he can and does play out wide, get the impression he is better centrally.
