Would we benefit from selling Modric this summer?

Pienaar's a better player than Joe Allen, comfortably better. VDV & Modric are a problem only in the sense that in our 4231 system (or whatever it is) then both would be best playing centrally in front of the 2 holders. VDV right (as we've seen this season) isn't getting the best from him same for Modric if he is there.

IF Mod was desperate to go and we got another stupid money offer I'd be tempted to take it, especially IF the money could be spent in the right places. Commit to the system, buy a genuine wide right forward who scores goals (Remy?) and could do a job up top if needed. Retain Ade and get an Ade back up, play VDV centrally and get a young back up for VDV whist retaining Pienaar. Maybe a young back up for Sandro/Parker. And above all get a manager who gets the best from them and makes them work their balls off. Easy.

He is gone what ever we want any way, we were lucky to keep him this season.

Sell, every aspect of his game has been pathetic, couple that with the absence of bale on the left wing and he hasnt had any outlets either.

I think it's fair to say the decision is out of our hands now. No CL, no hope and the same may well be said for one or two others - most notably Harry. It's the choke equivalent to Newcastle years ago it's inevitable we'll pay a very hefty price and for quite a few years unless we nail the next manager selection.

Cheers for your post JJ, we've got no chance of 45m now, let alone Kalou. My guess is high 20's and we should take it ASAP so we can sort the squad balance out well before the last day of the window.

I think we can only really have him or VDV in the team and VDV's heart is in it and he at least puts the effort in

He is exhausted and is suffering from MR R's lack of rotation. Same as Parker.

Do you know ironically that regarding my Moneyball reference that Billy Beane (Brad Pitt main character) is a huge spurs fan?

Understandable too. It's is also my biggest gripe with Redknapp's 'lacking squad depth' comments. If we'd rotated properly, we could have had a healthier first team as well as having bench players who were more able to fill in when injuries did hit. We're also so much more prone to injuries across the whole squad because the starters are run down and the back up aren't match fit. Anyway....

I'd heard Billy Beane was a fan but I'd thought it was more so because he was good mates with Comolli. Glad to hear his allegiances stuck with us and didn't switch to the Pool. Any chance he would spare a few days helping us in the off-season!??! There are a lot of things you could do with Modric cash and it's pretty important it's done effectively.

Just like I told you all a few weeks ago and I got plenty of negative rep for it...

Luka is IRREPLACEABLE. Forget the goal yesterday, his passing and movement were second to none. Same against Blackburn, he absolutely ran the show. So do me a favour, get your heads out of your arses, and back him.

He was being played out of position for how long?? And you all said he was throwing his toys out of the pram! Well you can stick that notion.

We show him ambition, he'll stay. Simple.

Or do you still want King Gylfie of Swansea, or Yann frickin M'Vila. DROP ME OUT.

I have always thought that keeping him would be the preferred option for Spurs fans...but in the realms of reality, if we don't attain CL he is likely to want out, and even if we do, he still might want to try to force a move. I, personally, insisted last Summer, that we should keep him even if it meant making a huge financial loss and having a player who wasn't playing, for the message it sent out. The message was sent - this Summer, of course we should do everything we can to keep him, but if he is gonna play up too much, I say sell him overseas and use the money wisely, or to Citeh at such a crippling premium that they can't but another player for the next five years without falling foul of the FP regs.

I just can't see Levy selling him for something in the £20mills when he turned down £40mill last year.
If someone from abroad comes in & offers £40mill+, early in the close season, I'd be resigned to accept it.
If he flings a strop and gets a move to one of the Manc clubs for £25 mill on the 1st day of next season I'd be livid.

Personally I think he's Manchester United bound :(

I agree 100%

The key thing for me is that Luka has said countless times he wants to play in the CL and fight for titles. There's no reason why we can't do that, but we need to show some real ambition. Go and pay a premium to get Hazard, or Jose as manager, or Pep. Do something so drastic that no-one will squeak about leaving.

Luka is the first name on the team sheet for me. We must try to keep him

Well, let's hope so.

Only, thing is, the lat time a player told our board to show some ambition and he would stay, they sold him to United - a certain Tedward Sheringham

While this is true, Pienaar's not a central midfielder. The reason I and many other people have suggested getting Allen in is that he has a very simialr style of play to Modric, and plays in exactly the same position. Thus, if we wanted to try and get a like for like replacement for Modric in order to keep the same system, he would fit the bill.

I don't think anybody has said he's as good as Modric, although he certainly seems to have the potential to be a very good player. He's also "homegrown" I think (Welsh but trained by Swansea who are part of the English FA), which is an important consideration now.

I agree that if we changed system a direct replacement for Modric may not be necessary.
