Which Spurs players would you describe as being ‘genius’?

Hoddle and Ardiles from ‘my era’. Fantastic players.

There have been so many that showed glimpses of genius, and many would argue against because of injury or other flaws. Gazza is the obvious one but from earliest memory I remember being dazzled by Ralph Coates on the TV. As an adult I loved Darren Anderton and argued for him as others were wanting to cut our losses on him, and I nearly cried when we sold Ginola lol. Moussa Dembele had a magical quality about him, wow. On his day Harry Kane does fantastic almost inexplicable things, acts of absolute genius.

I agree with many of the above, and would like to add Pat Jennings, Martin Peters (for his positional sixth sense) and John White.

Gazza, Hoddle, Modric, Ossie, Berbatov.

One for me too would be Dembele, my all time favourite Spurs player - completely unique in that he was big physically but could dance his way around 3 opposition players, just a supreme dribbler with great control - says alot when plenty opposition players say he was the best they've played against, Wilshere for one :cautious:

Always thought Vertonghen read the game extremely well, and his passing from the back was integral for setting us on our way

Genius suggests players who were not just really effective or successful but did stuff that blew your mind and lifted your spirit with magical skill, the sheer beauty and brilliance of their play. On that yardstick (still subjective of course!) of the players I've seen a decent amount of (e.g. discounting e.g. Greaves) no.1 is definitely Hoddle. Jennings, Gazza, King, Waddle, Berba and Kane get honourable mentions.

Modric springs to mind first. What a player. Not my favourite due to emotional connections but I think the best spurs player of my lifetime.

Hoddle was my childhood hero and had the skill and touch to match anyone.

Berbatov whilst not at the level of the above two was a majestic football who could do things others could only dream of

Gazza was the only person on earth worthy of taking over from Hoddle. It's a shame that he will probably be know lm for his troubles because he was unplayable when he was on.

Chris waddle had one particular season at spurs that was so good I reckon he had 10 genuine goal of the season contenders. The most underrated winger ever. He was as good as anyone.

David ginola was the French sexy version of Chris waddle.

Rafa Van Der vaart maybe a controversial choice but I don't think he was far off. His movement and intelligence were so influential at times.

Christian Eriksen maybe now at Man Utd but that doesn't take away from his vision and influence on games.
agreed re VDV - That first CL match at the Lane was like Roy of the Rovers stuff!

Always forgotten about, but such a class player.

Hoddle, Waddle, Ardiles, Gascoigne, Ginola, Modric, Bale, Berba, VdV, King and Gough. It all depends how you define genius of course, but I reckon this lot all saw things others didn't and made everything look so damn easy.

For me a genius should be someone who can both see and execute things that most others around them can't. Bale is without doubt the BEST player I've seen at Spurs but he doesn't fit that criteria. Berbatov, Modric, Ginola, Sheringham and Stephane Dalmat do. I'm a genius so you can't dispute any of them.

Missed out on the likes of Greaves. But from the ones I've watched, the genius players were Hoddle . . . and Gazza . . . then some of the players named above who were absolutely fantastic but never quite on their level.

Sissoko for holding down a central midfield spot for so long.

Gazza undoubtedly. People today just don't get how good he was. He had the talent to become the best player in the world. Had everything. Skill, goals, tenacity, vision, strength, pace, 2 feet, could dribble, take people on and deceptively quick. No English midfielder has come anywhere near him since he left spurs.

Hoddle, amazing. Just probably lacked a bit of dynamism. But had everything else.

Modric, he has gone on to prove what a truly generational talent he is.

Klinsman was a genius of a striker. The best in the world when he came to us the first time. He raised the bar in the prem.

Ledley, again, had the talent to be the best in the world. He made defending look easy. I remember at the beginning of one season he went 11 games without conceding a freekick! Only saw him truly outclassed once and that was playing holding mid for England when the great ariel ortega made our ledley look like he was playing in slow motion.

Barba, a rolls Royce of a player. His performance at home against Bolton when we won 2-0 with 10 men was as good as you'll see. Took a ball down out of the sky from a goal kick that was unbelievable. He was tight to the touchline, with 2 players around him and the ball coming over his shoulder. Killed it dead and drifted past his markers in that nonchalant way that he had.

Kane, probably the most consistent and complete player I have ever seen playing for spurs. He can do it all to the very highest level. Probably the best 10 in the league and definitely the best 9. He could play anywhere. I actually think that he'll play at this level until he is 35 or older.

For a shit team that can't win a trophy, we've certainly been lucky enough to watch some truly great players. Below them, we've also had loads of top class players like Bale, Defoe, Keane, mabbut, son, dembele, Toby, Jan, hugo, waddle, Eriksen, Bale, ginola, vdv etc etc etc

Ginola, Modric, VDV, Bale, Kane, Son, King but none more than Dembele - Dembele just turned me on with the way he played. Just awesome

Dalmat was gifted no doubt but to be a genius you have to do it consistently. There are loads of players who have occasionally done ridiculous things, but there are precious few that do it time and time again. Kane, gazza, hoddle etc produced time and time again.
