I asked this in a previous thread but it kind of got lost in the discussion.....

Assume for this we finish 7th this season.

What would be a bigger achievement:

a) Getting 5th in Jol's second season, going on the amazing run at the end of the season that took us from about 10th to 5th.

b) Surviving the drop and getting 7th this season.

Please try and look at just the points above and not the managers tenure as a whole.

I love Martin Jol, and what he did to put our great club back on the map again. But I seriously think that if we managed to finish 7th, from where we were at the start of the season, it will be an incredible acheivment. Harrys signings and the way we are playing now, excites me soo much for next season, and what he might be able to get the team to acheive with just a couple more signings, and I say only a couple, and a full pre season. Who knows.

Goota be BMJ, there's no reason we should have been bottom this year.

At least 'Arry did a good job, we only had 2 pionts from...

Although there have been a alot of average teams in Premier League this year, we were in a really precarious situation, so top half will be a real achievement

I've said finishing 5th. Whilst I feel finishing 7th (if we do) after being down and out is a pretty good achievement I feel that the concertina effect on teams this season has made it less impressive.

i went for 7th, to be in europe for a 4th season in a row and to basically do it in a 30 game season would be brilliant.. the 5th was good but 7th would be brilliant, also baring in mind we finished 11th last year!

In my opinion if we were to finish 7th and qualify for Europe after coming back from bottom of the league with only 2 points from 8 games, it would be a bigger achievement than finishing 5th in either of those two years we did it. Reason being it would have been done against the odds and much harder to achieve.

because that 5th position, we were almost to break the top 4, just one game to make CL place, remember where just crying for top 6 finish at the start.

as for this season, we were just 2 pts from 8 games, it was the worst start in our history, our EPL status threatened by relegation, we started to get good results by not losing fo the top 4 for along time, so to survive and get 8th or 7th something like mircle, it's proved Spurs could be ill, but never die. This is also good season if we finished 7th.

I agree. Its a tricky one but i think having been so cut adrift at the bottom i think to claw our way back through so many teams is impressive.

went for 7th - cos don't forget we also made a final too

tho the team of jol's 2nd was better overall no doubt about it and was a joy to watch (usually) - but to come 7th after the mess we were in ... that would be tremendous

There both totally different in there own rights but i'd have to say 7th this year purely because of the dire situation we found ourselves in, we were all but doomed the way we were going, what Harry's done is almost a miracle.

Neither. For me it was the first 5th place finish under Martin Jol. OK, we didn't play as many games, but to stay in 4th place for half a season was impressive. We may have missed out on 4th in the end, but to come so close to Arsenal (whether we like it or not) is a great achievment. You just have to look at how well Villa have done overall this season, yet how far they've now fallen behind Arsenal, to realise just how difficult it is to challenge them over the full season. But we did it for the entire season and almost got there. And we stayed in the top 6 all season too.

Redknapp. With Jol's 2nd season we massively underperformed for the first half of the season but were never on our knees in the way that we were when Redknapp came. I believe we had 2 points from 8 games.

I had a quick look at the only other club to have had such a bad start to the season and survive (southampton) they finished in the last non relegation position.

If we get 7th that is one hell of an achiement. But I can't decide on which to go for.

I'd take the 7th spot this season. When we finished 5th we should have finished 4th. Yes it was great to qualify for Europe via league postion but I always felt we should have done better.

I was looking more at the second 5th place finish then the year we lost 4th. I still think the outcome of 06/07, where we acheived 5th was more satisfactory than the year we lost 4th on the last day.

I'm with you buttons - i enjoyed the 06/7 season more than the previous one - I thought we played better football and the memories of that last day at west ham 05/06 are just very very horrible indeed

finishing 5th was by far the greater achievement because it was the 1st time in well over a decade that a manager had managed to put together an organised and effective team that also entertained and got results. It was a great season and the one that sparked a growth in the club's stature.

Its tough and difficult to compare really.

It would be amazing if we get in Europe next year, the new Europa League should add some dazzle to the shite that it is currently. But finishing 5th was good too.

I haven't voted, cos both are great, but very different.

Tricky, but I'd probably have to give it to Old 'Arry. Both will have been based equally on spectacular end-of-season runs and the failings of others, but HR gets the nod because the underperforming at the start of the season was not his fault.

The second fifth place under Jol was where we should have finished, and he got us there in the end after a cracking Spurs season of ups and downs. But the Jolly man has to take some responsibility for the fact that it needed a sensational late run to get there.

At the start of the season, I expected us, Villa and Everton to be fifth, sixth and seventh in some order, so 'Arry would have got us to just about where we should be. And he really can't be expected to take responsibility for the fact that it needed a sensational late run to get there. Two points etc.
