For me he's just a bit dopey.

He makes bad decisions too often for a CB. He gives away a lot of needless freekicks much like Gardner used to do. If you can't get the ball then just make sure the player can't go anywhere. Not decide to scythe him down. And he has one of the best players in the world training with them everyday showing him how not to give away freekicks in Ledley King.

For the penalty he got himself in a terrible position and got under the ball. You need to be able to deal with the long ball as a defender and when its in his comfort zone, about 40 yards from goal, he wins nearly everything. But when he needs to turn and get in position he gets lost sometimes.

With Kings arm around him he's able. Without King he's possibly made more mistakes then Kaboul this season.

But partnerships make all the difference. Anyone who had suggested Zat Knight would be a good signing for us would have been laughed off the board, yet he's looked a far better player alongside Laursen than he ever did for Fulham. And you have the example of Primus alongside Judas for Pompey last season. Would Richards shine quite as much as he does without the very underrated Dunne next to him?

Yer I agree SpurSince57

Sol "traitor" Cambell alongside Linvoy Primus. Last season those 2 looked as solid as any central defensive pairing in the PL. And before Sol paired up with him it would have been...."Linvoy who" ???

:clap:King and Dawson together gave us two excellent seasons defensively under Jol. Hopefully Woodgate and King work well together and Dawson works in tag with them to give the two warheroes a rest whenever need demands. Were Rebrov and Shevchenko (spelling?) not a high scoring partnershp , but apart they didn't quite do it to the same level? Keegan and Toshack had an unbelievable understanding for Liverpool in the 70's but I don't recall Toshack doing much afterwards once Keegan headed to Hamburg. Keane and Berbatov are excellent together and Lennon also looks to be tuning in very well. This team is starting to come together very well and Dawson will be a valuable part of it despite his flaws.

"shit," when used in the context of Tottenham, is clearly a relative term. NO ONE here is saying he is shit on an absolute basis (vs. you, me or johnny one-leg). When people use the word "shit" to describe Dawson, they are referring to the fact he is shit relative to other CBs in Premier League teams who are as ambitious as we are. I would be tempted to say he is one of the most error-prone CBs in the League but I can't say I'm knowledgeable enough to say that.

I take your point - but i'm not sure you can unpack the relatively complex comparisons of your suggestions from the one liner 'x is shit' -

I don't like to read this description of our players - and it is rarley useful or accurate IMHO :)

I agree that partnerships are very important in defence. And beyond that having a settled back 4 makes a huge difference.

Aston Villa this season and Portsmouth last season have/had very settled back 4s. Much like our defence a couple of seasons ago. The same players played consistently together. I think in these scenarios players like Zat Knight and Primus can look and indeed be great. As was Dawson.

Take away a couple of Villa's defenders and I think you'd see Knight more shakey. Same for Primus. Same for Dawson.

Richards definitely benefits from playing alongside Dunne but I think he'd look good without. He has pace to burn and when your that fast and strong it covers a multitude of sins. I think Richards makes quite a few mistakes but he's able to recover from them more then Dawson.

Dawson is true Spurs and I think he can turn it round. He is still young and gaining experience all the time. The ignorant people on here (who have prob supported Spurs for 2 years from their armchairs) really wind me up when they say he is sh1t always was always will be etc.
If you know your history, you will know that is rubbish. Sadly not many people in this thread seem to know their history...

Dawson is far from shit, thats fair enough and alongside King in the previous 2 seasons he has been rock solid for us. I think what we're saying here is that this season, without King, his flaws have been shown allot more and most certainly his lack of pace is cause for concern. His judgement without Kings leadership has also been poor and the stats don't lie. Look at the goals against column Eek

I commented earlier in this thread that what I DO love about him is that he is commited and always gives 110% for Spurs and in that respect, you can't ask anynmore from the guy!

In my opinion Dawson can still do a job for us but as a squad player not as first choice central defender. If fit, that will most certainly be King and Woodgate.
