Tottenham's Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen must have wished the World Cup came last summer.

Once Van Buyten retires, I think he'll be the number 1 to partner Kompany in the centre.

He plays LB under sufferance because they don't have a viable alternative. Unlike us, they can't buy one.

I'm not overly happy with Jan at the moment after his antics last season but that's more of a character thing and was probably because he didn't want to be playing for the PE Teacher.

Happy to defend his playing ability and the fact is that as many above have said, he's not really quite quick enough to play LB but moreover his head isn't really in it when he's put there and thats why he had switched off.

I actually think he had some very good outings for us at LB in past 2 seasons and he is capable but it's a bit like Corluka at RB, it never worked as well as it should have and he's now a CB as well.

Jan is a centre half, and a damn good one.

Its more his attitude that stinks when he has to play there for me.

Ok, it may not be his favoured or best position but whenever he is asked to do a job at LB, always seems such an effort.

I don't know whether he has some personal issues. In his first season with us, he always played with a smile on his face and enjoyed his game. Last year he was always frowning and didn't concentrate whether at LB of CB;and even yesterday it seemed his mind was elsewhere.

If Belgium choose to play him there it is their decision. Spurs cannot be blamed for what they decide. Vertongen needs to prove to Belgium that he should be played in his favoured position.

Once Van Buyten? The man is 172 years old. He'll never retire until Verts stabs him in the heart with a wooden spike!

(I say that with all the bests intent)

He is a top class CB and he is wasted by us when we play him at LB.

I keep hearing this, he's good but not top class

why do Belgium play him LB?

Why did we concede so many goals last season?

I'm not blaming him for all the goals we concede but he doesn't organise or galvanise anyone around him like a King.

With Verts I think its a little bit of style over substance I'm afraid.

He makes countless mistakes yet we have always let him get away with it due to his style. We are exactly the same with Vlad Chiriches too.

I was a bit young to know at the time, but were we the same with Ramon Vega?

Disagree, in his first season here he was named in the Prem team of the season, he plays LB for Belgium because they have no one else.
