There's always a couple of matches each year when a keeper has their best performance of the year; of course this was one of them.
We had 31 attempts and 14 on target. The expectation of that kind of performance is about 3 goals. Krul of course turned that single handed into 0 goals.
Very frustrating.
As is a world where Erik Lamela sits out the entire game and Defoe is considered 'the answer' to a team chasing goals. Bringing Defoe on when chasing the game was to my knee-jerking mind the single worst decision in AVB's entire tenure.
On the whole Newcastle's plan was decent, press us into oblivion, stop Townsend and defend. The first two they did well, the defending they didn't. How we didn't score will be one of the great mysteries and people may well talk about it long into the future, it really was that freakish. To have the entire second half and pepper their goal and end up with nothing... it defies belief, unless, you're a Spurs fan, then it's par for the course. Grrr...
Friedel 6 Fine apart from not being Lloris
Walker 6 Too little end product and indecisive
Dawson 6 Found out against pace
Chiriches 7 Tried to go forward
Vertonghen 7 Good shift
Paulinho 6 Unlucky not to score, general play a bit sub par
Dembele 5 He's had a bit of a mare there, Jeff.
Sigurdsson 6 Not involved enough
Eriksen 8 Shit dead balls, but general play was much more like it, so fuck off Alan Smith.
Soldado 6 Had chances
Townsend 6 Well marshalled
Sandro 8 Classic Sandro
Kaboul 7 Solid
Defoe 1 Please somebody buy him
Lennon: Better than last week
Lamela: What does he have to do to get on the pitch?
AVB: Worst substitution ever. 'I need a goal, let's bring on a striker!' is schoolboy management.
Team: Unlucky not to win easily, very frustrating.
Pardew: Such a twat.
edit: can someone add the poll, I clicked the wrong button! Cheers
