Point taken Marty, and cheers, but wigan was then.......the rules could have changed regarding eligibility between then and now! That's why i was asking for clarification on the announcement made by a SKY pundit/Div/idiot!

SKY idiot sounds about right

sorry about the harshness but it really pisses me off when after so much discussion there are still numpty's (Sky's man in this case) who just can't get it right.

Also i'm assuming that rules regarding UEFA cup qualification through winning it have changed this season - as this was definitley not the case last year.

Pretty sure it was, brasil_spur.

The rules were changed after Liverpool's win in 05 so they could play in the CL and were AFAIK also imposed in the UEFA Cup from that season.

yeh i remember the whole Liverpool fiasco - i guess perhaps the changes came into effect this season - as i remember Martin Jol kicking up a fuss about it last season - when it looked like we had half of chance of winning it.

What happens to the team who comes 2nd in UEFA cup assuming that the winner qualifies for CL through their domestic league??? (i.e. like Sevilla did last season)

Nothing AFAIK I'm afraid. UEFA Cup runner up gets no special admission.

Don't think Espanyol are/were in it this year, so that should be your proof if I am correct.

Because it is being asked and asked and asked and to save everyone from RSI here's the lowdown.

1: We need to win the Carling Cup to qualify for the UEFA Cup next season. Losing finalists do not get a place.

2: If we win the UEFA Cup this season, we qualify to defend it the following season as holders.

So, to qualify for european football next season, we need to achieve one of the following.

A win over Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final
Win the UEFA Cup
Finish high enough in the league
I won't mention the Intertoto Cup. ooops.

So, no more threads asking this please. Pretty please?

That is all

so hmmm like if win hmm like the carling cup and uefa like hmm like can we play with two teams - spurs 1 and spurs 2 ?

hehehehehehe

sorry A&C, only because u asked for no more questions, i kinda got tempted..

England are top of Uefa's fair-play rankings and will secure an extra Uefa Cup spot, starting in the first qualifying round, if they remain there when the final standings are calculated at the end of April.

After today's FA cup games, looks like their may be a Uefa Cup spot for the losing finalist. There are only two of the big 4 left. We will know after the draw for the sixth round who they will play. Hopefully not each other, if they both reach the final we will have a chance. If not then the losing finalist is guaranteed a spot.

Hang on, what have we just gone and won the cup for? There's no way we're going to qualify via the league now. RAMOS OUT.

Oops. Sorry all. I have no recollection for doing that, so I'll blame Houdini, who clearly hacked my account. :shifty:
