The boy was superb tonight. I know it's against very weak opposition, but nonetheless, he was outstanding. His forward passing and link up play is probably the best we have on the team, and that's saying something when you consider how little game time he's had compared to the established players. He clearly has the natural talent to be a playmaker and we need to develop him and invest in him.

I firmly believe that he needs Premiership experience and should be loaned out to a club in this league this season. As I said in the match thread earlier, the English press rave about Wilshere like he's the messiah of English football yet Carroll gets overlooked at times by Pearce in favour of that donkey, Shelvey, and Henderson. Don't get me wrong, Wilshere is a very talented young man and much more developed than Carroll (they're the same age), but we've got a potential diamond here.

As an Italian I love to see technical players who know how to pass a ball. Wilshere is the archetypal English bulldog of a player, he'll get stuck in and run around a lot. Carroll is of a continental mould and will affect the game in a more subtle way, pulling the strings and creating the chances. I don't want to get carried away and say he's going to be the next Pirlo or Xavi, but he's a revelation to watch in our current team which is, quite frankly, lacking in creativity, technique and flair.

I love this kid (no homo) and I desperately want him him to break through properly here, but I just can't see it happening.

Look at our midfield now...

Sandro (24)
Dembele (26)
Paulinho (25)
Capoue (25)
Holtby (22)
Sigurdsson (23) - possibly leaving
Eriksen (21)

... who is he going to displace? All of the creative midfielders are 23 or under. I just can't see him ever cementing himself as a first team regular which is so disheartening because he is so, so talented. Say we loan him out this year and he has a great season getting 30+ games under his belt, he's not going to want to come back and be 6/7th choice midfielder is he?

In essence. We have too many good midfielders. FFS LEVY. :p

My favourite player. Has the mentality and game philosophy that I just absolutely love. He wants to play the beautiful game.

Bill Nick would have raved about this one.

He just needs to play every week now to hone his craft. How many clubs would take him though and make him a first team regular?

It's a wonderful problem to have, but this is why we need to loan him out this year. If he really does well for a Premiership side then we'll know he's ready, much like Townsend. I don't want to see a Caulker situation where he decides to leave to find first team football, something which Townsend may end up doing I fear. There's going to be a lot of games this year and Townsend will play more than Carroll as he's got less competition. That midfield is certainly chock-full of players. Sigurdsson will leave if we seal Eriksen, I'm sure of that.

That's my fear as well. We pretty much have to loan Carroll out now and once we do, he's not going to want to go from regular premier league football (if we managed to get him a loan there) to perhaps getting onto the the bench for us and the occasional Europa league appearance.

Siggy should leave if/when we sign Eriksen I agree. Have a feeling it maybe only on loan though.

The idea is that once he's played regular football for a smaller Prem club he'll have to come back in and play a rotational part for us, a much larger Prem club, the following season. It's something Townsend and Rose will have to do this season if they want to remain a part of the club. A lot of players may not have the patience for it after playing week in and week out, but it's not a bad thing either. Whether we're in Europa League or (hopefully) Champions League the following season we'll still have a shitload of games to get through and we'll need to rotate. When they get their chance to play they need to take it, and then they'll be featured on a regular basis. If they're good enough, they will take their chances and reap the rewards.

Patience and perseverance, with a sprinkling of graft. It's the only way to make it into a big team from youth level I'm afraid.

I agree with what you're saying, it's easier for Rose and Townsend to do this now as they've not got tons of class players in front of them in their position. I can't even see Carroll being rotated fairly if he comes back after a successful loan deal unless we start shifting midfielders. I think he'll end up being sold which would be truly gutting for me.

He has got real talent, if we can find him the right loan move he could really push on this season. Someone like Swansea would be excellent, maybe even Ajax if we can convince them.

Alternatively if we sell Sig and use Eriksen as LWF we could rotate Holtby and Carroll in the creative midfield role.

taking your views on board, how then can we develop him as a player?

how good can he become in your view?

Hes not really a CAM but if we play him there with the sole purpose of feeding soldado I think he'd excel

Maybe with the view of Cabaye leaving to the Arse Carroll could be needed at Newcastle, but I doubt a loan to a french side will help him o_O

If we pay a 4-3-3 the majority of the time it will consist of a box-to-box midfielder, a DM and a creative player. Carroll can be the creative player in some games, he isn't experienced enough to take on the responsibility of a proper CAM role yet.

We can't do anything to help him anymore at this point without loaning him out to a premier league side to be honest. Then we'd need him to either seriously step it up a big level to break into the side over Holtby/Eriksen or we'd have to sell players to clear the way for him (which we probably won't do). It's a really tricky situation really.

There's certain aspects of his game he needs to improve IMO, he need's to start taking on players and add more goals to his game. If he does that then I could easily see him as a regular for the England team. He's got star quality that you can't teach.

One of the weaker prem teams like Manu or Pool would be perfect for his development.

After watching him tonight, and watching AVB's reaction to his performance, I think we will try and bring him into the first team gradually throughout the season.

Carroll offers non stop attacking passing, vision and finesse, which none of our current or new players offer.

but I think that when he possession he just looks as if he has lots of time- unlike some of the others mentioned in this thread who have other skills that he does not appear to have

His performance this evening was outstanding. Granted the opposition were poor, but the intelligence, passing and movement he showed just left me with a very warm feeling inside.
