I don't get the robot thing that everyone has picked up on. It's just tracking software We don't call it robot goal line technology.

Most likely they are leveraging the power of RPA (Robotic Process Automation) to automate what is currently a human process.

The var team is still verifying that the software is identifying the correct players and the correct frame in which the ball is played. It just gets rid of the line drawing part.
I hope it's just checking the AI selects the right frame and not selecting it themselves as I don't trust that human element either.

I wish they would just give a good 20cm in favour of the striker.

I think the trade off of a much more accurate system is going to be that a centimeter offsde is offside. There really won't be benefit of air to the attacker
It's just not a rule that needs to be applied that strictly. It's ruining the game for me.

Yeah but the line is going to be the line and it has to be drawn somewhere. We can set it as 5 cm and then people get annoyed when 5.1cm gets called off. Once you have a system like this that is wildly more accurate then those decisions are even more inevitable.

If the threshold is 20cm and someone is 20.1cm off then it's unlucky but the striker is clearly getting an advantage. If someone is 0.1cm offside then it's just stupid.

But how is that different then 5 vs 5.1 or 0 vs 0.1? It's an arbitrary number.

It's not arbitrary, it's just redifining the distance a striker needs to be offside by to actually gain an advantage.

Saw the highlights of the Man Utd vs M'boro game.

Thought the M'boro handled the ball and gained an advantage for their goal.

But VAR reviewed and said goal stands.

Not sure that was the right decision.

Totally agree, if that’s a defender it’s a pen!
However, it happened at OT and they lost, what goes around eventually comes around!

Seems similar to the Salah handball against us in the league, and I don’t recall anyone but Spurs fans being remotely concerned about that ‘contentious’ decision!

It's ridiculous. If handling the ball gives an advantage then the goal should be ruled out or a pen given.

I don't understand why the distinction is accidental or deliberate.

If the goalie takes out the striker without touching the ball it's a pen even though the action is nearly always accidental as they were going for the ball.

Does RoboVar make allowances for hairy legs or will players need to shave to get the rub of the green?

I'm sure that was the rule for decades up until recently.

Tbh, I've lost track of handball rules as they've changed a number of times over the last few years.

Yeah I was expecting it to be part time, considering:
  • Ideally with a degree in a science, technology, mathematics or engineering course or relevant equivalent experience
  • Bright and enterprising with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to liaise with clients and customers in a professional and approachable manner
  • Strong active listening skills, particularly under extreme pressure
  • Full valid driving licence required, willingness to drive our vans
  • Willingness to travel domestically and to work overseas
  • Flexible and adaptable to a schedule that is dedicated by the fixture list and can change at short notice
  • Acceptance that the nature of our business means that work will be carried out over weekends/bank holidays
(note the 'benefits' include "25 Days' Annual Leave; 8 Public Holidays;". How do you get all the bank holidays if you're working them?)

So basically a STEM graduate, with excellent problem-solving skills, intelligent, personable, handles pressure well, can drive and is willing to work weekends and bank holidays...

...but somehow can't get any other job than offers little more reward than McDonalds.

Still, if money isn't your motivator, and you like to travel...

It's not the actual VAR position. There's someone called the replay operator who brings up angles that the VAR wants to see. It's basically just extra technician there to help.
