They tackle high to try and stop the quick offloads etc. and to try and force turnovers by holding the player up/stopping them going to ground.

Yes, but tackling shoulder high doesn't achieve any of that. It has to be chest high and wrap the player up.

SA are playing schalk brits at no 8 (he's 38). He's fucking crazy when you think some players lose their athletic ability in their early 30's.

Ok but I reckon most of the time that's what they're trying to do, but they mistime it or the player moves/dips etc. I don't think most of the time the intention was to get them right up on the shoulders. Obviously you have the odd incident where it's a deliberate attempt to just hurt someone but that's a minority of cases IMO

Players 'dipping' into tackles is a contentious issue. We had the frankly ridiculous situation when the high tackle protocols were first introduced wher player wer going for the try line with incredibly low body positions, and defenders were being penalised because the only possible firstl point of contact was around the head and neck which were actually lower than waist high. Thankfully some common sense prevailed and I think the same approach needs to be taken with tackling in general. Quite often a high tackle is a direct result of the actions of the player with the ball.

Wonder if that tackle will be picked up after the game for it being high.

Thought Ireland were a tad unlucky there. It’s not like that Japanese player was in a position to contest that high ball and the collision meant he couldn’t catch it. Missed the pen anyway

This is completely deserved btw, can have no complaints if we lose this, Japan have been excellent.

I love the way Japan play - so positive and full of energy and enthusiasm. They're running the ball from their own 22 only 4 points ahead in the last 10!

That should be good enough for at least a draw. We haven't scored for 50 minutes now, nowhere near good enough but full credit to Japan for not letting us. They just don't give away penalties either.

The high tackles ive seen some of them the player is dipping before the tackle is made which makes the tackle seem higher than it actually is - is the player dipping considered when it comes to high tackles?

Its like a high foot in football, i sometimes see a high foot foul awarded even though the foot was at a decent level but the player dipped to head the ball or whatever.

I don't disagree, but if you go to tackle at chest height you are always running the risk of it being/looking like a high tackle, and with how they are reviewing them so much I'd be expecting it to be at least looked at.

Impressive show in that second half from Japan, it was like a different Ireland came out after the break.
