The Quirkiness of White Hart Lane

I don't remember seeing a thread on this etc...

White Hart Lane is an unusual ground in that the hardcore home support are a) right next to the away supporters b) split into 2 different stands. I'm think I'm right in saying that's unusual?

What's everyone's thoughts on that set-up and how it will (presumably) change with the new stadium? I, for one, love the proximity of the away end to the Park Lane boys - it's such a charged atmosphere (my mate calls it 'intimate hate'). And I love all the Park Lane/Shelf Side back and forth.

I've not actually looked into it, but I'm guessing we'll adopt a more traditional Kop-style format in the new place. Our most vociferous: behind a goal, on one bank. Them lot: somewhere opposite, tucked away.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of one solid bank of loud Spurs fans holding their scarves aloft behind one goal, but I think we'd lose an aspect of quirkiness that makes White Hart Lane so special.

Loud Spurs fans? I take it you haven't been in a few years? :)

Funnily enough the last game I went to was the infamous Hull game last season and AVB's rant. It was dire. But I remember the 90s and we occasionally replicate that on a very good day! ;) I'll be there on Sunday so hoping it'll be alright for West Ham

Officially the home support is in the Paxton road though, that was made the members stand so the Park Lane, like the east stand etc, is just where other Spurs supporters can sit so that they can move them out for cup games when the away team get a larger allocation.
Moving people out of the Park Lane means no detrimental effect as the hardcore home support is in the Paxton.
I know what you're going to say but that's the official position:)

Who am I to argue with the official position!? ;)

I have slowly moved about the ground over the yeas, starting in the shelf and then to the Paxton rd end, this used to be a fantastic atmosphere! Now to the park lane end, I love this ground and although we need to change I will really miss it

Is our away end the best in the prem ? Away fans always sound really loud in their little corner of the lane. 3000 hardcore spurs nutters would sound even better.

Surely it's because of the away fans that the Park Lane is loudest? The away fans are making noise so the Park Lane home fans respond. It's certainly the most heated part of the Stadium. As said the Paxton Rd end is really the family end and could be considered the home end. I expect the new stadium will keep the family end separate from the away corner. If the football is good then the atmosphere will be good.

I'd say the away fans in any ground are always the loudest but I take your point.

I started off in the boys enclosure on the edge of the standing tier of the shelf adjacent to the Park Lane End. From the 1970's it was the Park Lane End and the shelf about 1972 before too long it was the Paxton where we could meet and greet the away supporters. Must have spent 15+ years standing on the terracing and then the seats behind. During the bad mid 1970's you could sometimes sit on the terracing and watch a match and also as I have on here before you could change ends at half time just by taking a quick stroll if you wanted to see the action better.

Yes TCO..I starting off in the paddock/enclosure in the west stand, when the old man had his seat above...If he didn't have a seat we'd move to the Pen (as we called it), the same place TCO mentions....As I remember the Park Lane & Shelf was always our traditional ends so to speak....later the firms would occupy the Paxton, when they split the PL for away fans, more moved to the Paxton...brings back memories the things TCO says..walking around the ground, changing ends at half time....sitting on the floodlights when it was rammed!!

I think Paxton is quiet because it's where the older (richer, ST-holder) fans - who suffered the 90s and 00s - sit. They are the more cynical ones

Park Lane and Shelf corner has a much younger, energetic feel to it. People who really want to be there and enjoy it, rather than go by default
