Not too disastrous a weekend for Merc, still need to get their finger out with that car though.

Leclerc is a fantastic driver, defending after the safety car he set himself up so well, must've been so frustrating for the three behind him. Good luck to him.

Leaky something in the Redbull, "Everything is shitting itself" is probably a technical term, but this track seemed to have everyone a bit nervous and it ended up with Mercedes and Mclaren having a really good race. That'll do both team's confidence the world of good.

Usually you have the back markers who struggle the whole season, the midfield who will have good races and bad and the top few teams who will rotate on the podium but, other than the Ferraris, this year seems to be a lot less predictable, which can only be good.

...or it's just a rule and this website is making a bigger deal of it than need be. Lot's of professions require you to wear no jewellery for safety reasons, this just seems like a reminder.

People really need to stop looking for reasons to paint Lewis as some sort of victim. There's no target on him. (though iirc Montoya literally had a target on him when he drove a Chevy in NASCAR).

So after 290 races they tell him they will enforce the jewellery ban

Also not one website every one has said its odd that it got brought up during interviews

Ted kravitz sums it up perfectly imo

Apply the sniff test: Why? Why would they have this unspoken petty grudge against one single driver, to the point where they publicly call them out for wearing jewellery?

Is it perhaps because everyone else adheres to the rule and despite being told dozens of times one driver continues to ignore that rule, so they've said it louder? That seems far more plausible.

We don’t know this is aimed at Lewis, for all we know Leclerc might have a Prince Albert that he’s refusing to remove.

Nah, they've also said about underwear and watch straps - it's for safety in the event of a fire.
No they didn't, when they media reacted they talked about that in defence of his comments

Here is where it started. They said in the pre race notes, that jewellery would be checked on the drivers prior to the race, not Watch straps, not underwear and etc.

They highlighted the rest of the rules to make themselves look better

The statement is so out of place is looks mental hence why Ted Kravitz even said it looks like they are targeting lewis

Right, except according to the BBC's story on Hamilton not liking driving the current Merc, it was the major subject at the driver's briefing:

The DRS on the back straight took up a very small amount of discussion in a drivers' briefing that ran to two hours, the majority of which was taken up by the reminder the FIA gave before the weekend that the wearing of jewellery and non-compliant underwear in a racing car was forbidden.

Inevitably, given Hamilton's visible nose stud, this was immediately perceived by some to be targeted at him. But that was not the case. The nose stud is a minor concern for the governing body.

Far more worrying for the FIA was the fact that they had discovered - it is not quite clear how - that some drivers are racing in normal underwear, which is not fireproof and is therefore a risk to them, as it could melt in a fire. And the same goes for a watch with a plastic strap. Metal jewellery, of course, is a heat conductor and would risk worsening injuries in a fire.

Hamilton said "it was the longest driver briefing of my life" - a point true, it seems, both in a literal and figurative sense.

"I don't really understand the small things they're picking up, like the underwear," he said. "Are we really talking about that sort of thing? Anyway, we move on."

But if you want to go all tinfoil hat about Hamilton in some way being targeted, then you carry on.

interesting stats from the 1st 3 races:

  • George Russell finds himself 2nd in the championship - despite Mercedes being well off the pace of the Red Bulls and Ferraris.
  • Mercedes are the only team to have both cars finish in the points in all 3 races.
  • Mercedes are the only team to have both cars finish all 3 races

I expect Red Bull will figure out how to get everything bolted on tightly by Imola and that should push Max back into the championship race, but he/they have dug quite a hole after only 3 races. If Mercedes can find some pace, then I think we would have a great strategic season, at a minimum, with pit stop strategies really coming into play. But as it stands now - Ferrari are going to win at a canter.

I know it's not F1 but I assume this is where I'll find any petrol heads who might be watching the GT race this afternoon - Wow wow wow, that was incredible racing. Adam Carrol in the Audi and Jules Gounon in the Merc, Gounon scrapped the field up from tenth and those last two laps were just spectacular from both of them.

Top marks to Carrol for holding out but Gounon! Tikaboo, son, that was magnificent.
