In terms of Coutinho I think he'd be a star for us. I think he could potentially play Eriksen's various roles pretty effectively. I personally think Barca made a mistake by playing him wide too often, almost like a direct Neymar replacement. He was starting to show promise for Liverpool and Brazil in more central AM role.

I'm 99% sure I read just last week that Coutinhos agents said they would not allow him to go out on loan anywhere.
It depends what sort of loan it is though I would've thought. There have been various FFP avoidance schemes that are permanent transfers dressed up as loans due to compulsory purchase terms (Mbappé to PSG was one).

Coutinho is class. I think he's a better player than Eriksen. He is more dynamic.

Why were we not in for him earlier?

Eriksen Coutinho swap would be interesting, gets Eriksen the move to one of the Spanish giants he was clamouring for and gives Coutinho a fresh start.

Ah Coutinho. Desperately wanted him when he was on the out at Inter as he was a bargain, but we had just re-loaded in the AM position back then with the likes of Eriksen and Lamela. Funny how things can come back around.

Always thought Eriksen would be more suited to Barca than Madrid

This place could be a hell of a research asset into whether internet forums cause people to have bipolar or just attracts people who do.

Only thing I'd say about Coutinho as an "eriksen replacement" is that they really aren't similar at all and in fact Dele is far more comparable to how Coutinho plays. I posted the below in the Coutinho thread some weeks back

Agree. He's wont replace Eriksens ability to dictate tempo, he's more about moments. Throughballs, shots and action. Barcas plan was to have him replace Iniesta, but found out pretty soon that he was ill suited to a role like that and sent him out wide again.

Or people just love the club and want the best for it? Caring for something will raise the stakes either way. Then it just comes down to people's different coping mechanisms.

Not sure I understand why Barca would want loan with option vs straight sale?

Perhaps it’s an FFP thing to delay the accounting hit on the sale? They get a loan fee to cover another year of book value amort and then the sale covers the rest (although would have same impact if the sale just happened at the combined price anyway?)

I think before Ali Z had posted, there was this from BEN on FTL...

Phillippe Coutinho Is the man Poch wants to replace Eriksen who will be going

It does explain why we haven't coughed up the extra bit to push GLC over the line as clearly there are variables. You're not going to force through your 2nd choice if your 1st could still happen.

Few Ali bits on Eriksen:

- he will not sign a new deal no matter how much you throw at him
- he burnt his bridges from what i hear, he wants out.
- doubt either Spanish club really want him
- It is not over yet but I agree so much going on 48 hours to ensure we don't have unhappy players, unhappy manager and the need for major surgery next summer.
