I heard a while back that Everton employ a scout who trawls through football manager looking for players based on stats.
Other clubs are also rumoured to do this, and they pass player names onto 'real' scouts who then check out the players.

Sega (previously Eidos) spend a lot of money on researchers for each club in the game. After playing thee game for 20 years I'd have to say they're normally right about prospects and wonder kids that turn into top players. Doesn't surprise me Everton utilise the database.

Pretty sure that Everton have a deal for access to the 'real' data collected, rather than merely the game database. The Collyers are big Toffees fans.
