I've seen the light!
What if Paulinho is a massive bluff!?

Andre says to Jason Burt:

'Hey mate, we need to put Chelsea & the money clubs away, write an article that we're well in for Paulinho and that Bernard is a poxy midget who'll never survive in a Primary school tournament never mind the Premier League, and they'll all go nuts bidding for Paulinho, bidders drop out for Bernard, Big Dan does his magic with the post dated cheques and bingo, BERNARD is a Tottenham player, okay? Thanks bud.'

Fair enough but they can still pay more than the release clause or kill us on the wages.
Yes they can, but it would not hinder us, all it'd mean is they're idiots. The wages is the one, if a player has a release clause and we match it, we cannot be gazumped on the fee.

Well considering Paulinho is a better player than Bernard I would hope that isn't true.

Ok yeah you're right on the transfer fee, general point is though that if they want the player they'll throw money at it in one way or another be that wages, agents fees, transfer fees in order to make it impossible for us to compete. So what I'm saying is we need to try and wrap up a deal asap before interest mounts, specially off the back of an international tournament.

If we're getting shut of Hudd, Parker & Livermore then we need to bring in another CM as well as Paulinho IMO. They don't have to be in the calibre of him but we can't afford to be too light in that area. A couple of injuries again and we're fooked.
Carroll, Bentaleb, Luongo etc.

A Cm group of those three plus Sandro, Dembele, Paulinho would be perfectly adequate.

From the players we have been linked to, I think we'll go for a box-to-box mid to start alongside Dembele (Paulinho, Guarin) and a backup DM who's young and full of potential (Marrone, Can). Add a striker (Villa, Damiao), a young wing forward (Aubameyang, Bernard), and maybe another prospect or two and I'd be extremely optimistic about next season.

This is the classic, reasonable expectation from a fans point of view that the club would do well to deliver on half of. unless we ship a bunch out, there is no way we will be this busy in the transfer window imo. You forget that we have Siggy, Holtby and Dempsey at the club filling squad places.

what will probably happen will be 1 striker and 1 cm and a left back or sth but you can only be sure of one thing. The players we do sign will be of business value more than importance to deficiency in the squad.

I believe signing anyone other than a starting 11 player or a promising youth is completely against the direction within which the club is moving. It's time to clear house, buy talent and move some of our current starting players/fringe players to squad players and show our previous squad players to mid/low table teams. Any money spent on a business value squad player or someone in a position of non-need is money wasted. I would like to hope that we are done signing the Dempseys of the league. If we continue with old habit, we will slowly slip back year after year, and further from cl spots.

That should probably go into it's own player thread.

That being said, if Cardozo were any slower he'd go backwards.

He does score goals, but given his age and other guys that are seemingly available, he'd be far down my list of strikers I want.

With Paulinho, Dembele and Sandro surely we'll need someone who can add a bit of passing ability to the equation. Someone who can recycle posession.

Moutinho was that guy last summer. Is that guy no longer necessary?

Fully behind AVB's choices, just a question really.
What if villas Boas wants to play same formation as this season 4231 with sandro & paulinho in middle 2 Bale Rw Bernard Am dictating play & Dembele lw villa upfront, just an idea, personally I'd.prefer someone like Banega, Thiago, Maher or Dzagoev 2 come in as a playmaker instead of paulinho or if villa played in the hole with Bernard lw & a soldado, Negredo or gomez type upfront

I don't really agree. For instance if we had a speedy, tricky squad winger last season to fill in when Lennon was injured and Bale moved inside, we probably would have made CL. It's all about having the right pieces to give AVB options.

after seeing all these players that we are linked with, i can confirm that the biggest difference between this and the next season will be our pressing. i think avb is moving away from the traditional playmaker, b2b, anchor, into strong-tackler-that-can-run-and-move-the-ball-fast X2, 1 anchor. with guarin/paul, dembele, sandro pressing high up means we are going to play alot more in their half than ours.

if we are having such a fucking solid midfield that can win us possession, i reckon we will also move away from the usual one winger one inverted forward to 2 inverted forward. that would be bern and bale(both has guile, pace and goals in them). i wont be surprise if bale is employed on the right, and lennon on the left more(as a sub) next season. them cutting in will essentially means we have 5 players playing in the middle of the final third.

last change will of course be our full backs. walker is fine and he will have an easier time with bale drifting in, because clearly he can only go right when attacking. avb's tactic will require the fullbacks to go down the by line often to over lap the forwards that are cutting in, which clearly is what bae hates doing. i would be really really surprise if bae is not sold by the end of this window. AP is the perfect WB for this formation as hes practically a LM. hopefully rose will be happy to be rotated as he has the potential to be a great WB as well.

i can see why we seem to be going for the FW, MF and LB first because they will be extremely essential to the change of formation. i reckon we will only get the strikers done only after we've truly settled on the formation. because variables like eg not getting bernard = bale back on left. bale back on left = back to 2 wingers, = we will need a striker thats a stronger header, whereas if we get bernard, a player with smarter off ball movement will be require because shorter passes will be played, spaces get more cramped up etc etc
AP?

Get a grip man! Our squad will still have nowhere near the depth of Man U, Man City or Chelsea.

Bit harsh. We brought in around 6 players last window didnt we? So to bring in 3 isn't out of the ordinary.

Just by getting rid of Parker, Huddlestone and Livermore we could afford Paulinho 15m.

Selling Naughton and or BAE will get us potentially 10m, plus an extra 5m then their wages could cover Bernard.

Then any other sales we make Defoe? Pay max another 15mil and plenty of wages leftover from Bentley, Gallas and other realease and we have Damiao.

Net spend of 20mil. Granted I cant remember the last time we made a net spend of that much, but with ITK saying there's a warchest (Id expect that to mean a bit more than 20mil) then I dont think it's outrageous that we could acquire these players. Only problem would be Levy messing about thinking he can get them for cheaper.

WRT to no squad depth the players I mentioned being sold or released they were either not being used much and/or we have capable youngsters to step up and replace i.e. Carroll, Rose and Smith

Despite some of our wishes, I actually think LB may be ignored this window, even if BAE is sold.

While the debate on Rose is pretty much split 50/50 (He's good enough, he's not good enough), I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that we go into preseason with AVB essentially giving him what he wants: the keys to a starting LB position for a Top 4 contending side. Should he falter, we'd have Verts there to possibly hold us over until January, or if Rose were to flop right from the start, perhaps a late window move could be made for a LB replacement.

I'm not trying to get into a hypothetical "I would go for talent A, B, C..." here, but I do think we may look at adding goals in midfield, solidifying the LW position and obviously squaring away the striker position (most likely with 2 signings - 1 hopefully proven, the other a 'striker in waiting').

While I do believe the LB position is one of the most intriguing ones this window, with the true lack of ITK in regards to targets, it may be one that has to be overlooked to address what I consider to be more pressing concerns, if only to wait for one window.
