“Sometimes our vision in the professional side cannot be the same and sometimes [we] can have some disagreements. But the most important thing is that the personal relationship is still strong. This morning Daniel [Levy] showed me a picture that we took on the last day at White Hart Lane where we are together with the coaching staff and his family and he said: ‘Look, our personal relationship is still there.’”

That's an anecdote drenched in desperate melancholy.

It seems things really were bad until that dinner.

Or it could be that Levy was just remarking that the relationship is as strong as ever. It feels like people are willing the Poch era to come to an end.

That's exactly what it was. I'm more interested in the fact it was needed. It gives off a sense of melancholy. It's bittersweet. It's conciliatory and nostalgic.

A press conference leaving no doubt and no cryptic answers. I think that conversation with Daniel must have gone really well. Poch seems to have gotten his swagger back. Hopefully it translates on the pitch on Sunday.
God I hope so, a good win but most importantly performance on Sunday and I can see us going on a run tbh

Good point.

Some people operate best when there’s a personal element or investment in something. I’d say this is how Poch operates. He’s passionate, personal and tends to view his relationships with the world as fundamental interactions to his being- his book constantly frames these ideals.

It’s possible he felt this interaction was dwindling, his connection with the club, Levy (who he clearly respects on a personal level), some key players was loosing their vitality and value. Perhaps the thing that makes him so charismatic and influential to players, his passion and love of the personal was waning after an exhausting 2018-19 season and this disconnect from the things he loves had a profoundly unsettling affect on him, and then by degrees those around him.

Either way, his dinner with Levy, the personal dynamics of that interaction, the things he needed to say and needed to hear seem to have shifted his energy because his press conference today was one of charm, humour and vitality. His joke about Merson was superb and would have had his players, staff and everyone associated with the club chuckling with glee and pride because he essentially stated through that joke that Tottenham means everything to him right now and that cheap punditry offering its misinformed, simplistic judgements of things it doesn’t understand can go fuck itself.

While some of what he said was melancholic and wistful, it was also defiant yet affirmative

It was extremely odd when Poch announced in the build up that he would probably leave if we won. Again, you have to wonder what effect that had on the players. It certainly wasn't what I wanted to hear. I tend to think he would have left and also if we hadn't made top 4 which , really, we shouldn't have, so I get the feeling his mindset has been that way for a while, a bit like several of his squad.

It was odd I agree

Trying to find excuses but was he serious?
Has anything been lost in translation?

Fingers crossed ? for Sunday

Excellent post. The sharp swerve in tone, tack, cadence, word choice, body language and mood today does a lot to highlight how irritable he's been lately. We haven't seen this Poch in ages.

Jenas on 5Live says he spoke to a couple of our players this week, one of those surely Rose, and there are definitely some who are unhappy at the moment in the camp.

The press conference today is certainly a step in the right direction. A positive and upbeat Poch is best for everyone.

Now we need to hope that translates to the players and we start performing.

If performances don’t pick up, and players aren’t happy (far too much coming from ITK’s and people like Jenas) that no matter how good their personal relationship is, then Levy will still sack him.

I’m hoping that dinner means everyone has turned the corner and we are back on track. But after all our poor form since January, I’m not going to get too excited just yet (although my fingers are crossed!).

Eriksen probably peeved off because he hasn't got the move he wanted, VW because he has had it injuries wise, and a few wondering how they are going to get their places back.
