A couple or so years ago we were well known for being a rather short side, height wise, which was why we were constanly out of sorts at set pieces but when Hutton replaced Kaboul on Saturday I realized for the first time that our average height has now shot up considerably.
Apart from O'Hara, Modric, Lennon, VDV the rest of our players (mainly first team squad) are much bigger and stronger than we've had in the past.
Tomorrow's game against Arse anal, taking into account that some youngsters and Sandro will be playing, are all much taller averaging around the 6' mark if I'm not mistaken.

All the more reason why we should be more of a threat from set pieces. Crouch, King, Dawson, Huddlestone, Bale, Jenas, Kaboul, Corluka and Gallas are all then more capable in the air. We should be scoring more goals from set pieces for sure.

Remember Spain won the World Cup with a not particularly tall squad.
Tim Cahill wins loads of headers but is of average height(please note he doesn't out jump people don't get me started on that).
I think height can be overrated in football at times, the mess Terry and Upson got themselves into for Germany's first goal was caused by a long put from their GK with Ozil running at them.
That said I'd still prefer CB's GK's to be in the6ft 4 range.

Indeed.

For the moment however, I'm just glad that we're no longer in the situation of collectively crapping ourselves every time a free kick is given away within 80 yards of the goal

Do you remember how bad it used to be? Blimey

Apparently Chelsea are the heaviest in the PL. Something in the Guardian about it. I think it said they were also the tallest.

Not surprised at all

And fair play, they use it to excellent effect. It pains me to say it, but they're a monster of a side at the moment

But then they should be given the money they've spent.

It's devastating when you think we'll almost certainly be saying the same thing about Man City in 2 to 3 years time

I think it said Chelsea are indeed the heaviest but Stoke City are the tallest

I remember last season when we played Chelsea thinking we looked anorexic compared to them.
All their players were colossal, they must do weight training at Chelsea or something.

Everyteam does weight training. I wouldnt say chelsea do "more" weight training then any other team.

If you take there team against blackpool yesterday for example, 7 of their 10 outfield players were black. Essien, Ramires, Mikel, Malouda, Kalou, and Drogba. Genetics have a strong part to play, african players are generally beasts.

Not really fair representations of our squad those stats when you consider we have a giant and the Hudd who probably weighs more than Lennon, Defoe and Modric put together

Yeah, and i is a feature I most pointedly noticed when they walked onto the pitch against Stoke (at the start of last season:shrug:) where it was apparent fr all to see that one player after another, they were shorter than the corresponding Stoke players. And boy did they struggle in that game:rofl:

The best was the Everton team of yore. Average height = "We are the diddy men"/"The Munchkins out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory":eek:mg:

If it is based on probable starting 11's then the rest of our first team must be real bruisers to make up for Defoe, Lennon and Modric.

L.A. Yiddo, thanks for the chart as I really had no idea what the average height in Premier league football is now. Certainly times have changed, during the days when school kids would run onto the pitch after a game I was always impressed to see that Dave Mackay was around my height and really pleased to see that Billy Bremmner and Johnny Giles were even shorter but man have they grown.

The lack of size in our squad was my biggest gripe 2 years ago and I am delighted that we can now stand our ground and mix it with anyone!
This policy of bringing in taller, more powerful players was definitely on Harry's urgent list of things that needed to be addressed.
