Nile John has been performing pretty consistently for the U21s and has been training with the first team lately. But I suspect the problem on this occasion was late withdrawals from players who had already travelled.

To me the players who really deserve a call up are Soonsup-Bell and Lyons-Foster (I’m not sure what the latter’s eligibilty position is during the window).

Given how it is going with injuries I’m not sure it’s a given we will have more players available as the season progresses.
Only reason Some of them train with the first team is that we have run out if players. All things being equal I would think only Donnelly would be with them.

His decision.
because he didn't see a path to the first team which was the point we were making how many have actually been good enough and gone on to play at this level. Him and Edwards are the only two I can think of that we lost due to no playing time and have gone on to prove us wrong.

you guys are right. how dare the boys think of having a bench spot instead of a 3rd GK when they are not smashing other teams 10 goals in each game? Spurs is so good that you are considered as not good enough even you win 10 out of 10 PL2 games (y)

how much transfer budget could have the "only" two saved for us to sign better players in other positions? :ROFLMAO:

speaking of former youth players, i think kwp would/would've thrived as an ange inverted full back. playing inside and able to use his ability to turn away from pressure and move the ball forward would suit him perfectly. he never quite had the sheer athleticism to be a marauding full back at the top level but in this system i think he would've fit really well.

He's also playing in the team that has the most possession in the Championship and he regularly finds himself in and around the box. Think it'd be so natural for him

*KWP that is

To be honest if it wasn’t for injuries I doubt Donley would’ve got a look in. But we are where we are in terms of playing resources.

Of course not relevant to our youth thread, but I though the same thing regarding Foyth. I remember many of ous thought he should have been a midfield player, rather than a CB, as he is so good on the ball. He's now found his home at RB for Villareal and Argentina, but like KWP, his game is ideal for an inverted full back.

Problem was most played a day or two before and also didn't travel up with the squad.

Not seen the full reason as to why we had 2 keepers on the bench, but we know there was illness within the team and Kulusevski pulled out (not sure if others got ill/injured ect ) meaning we didn't have anyone else for the bench? Happy to be told that's wrong.

We had also one empty slot, so reckon we missed at least two out of players who travelled. Did Sess get knock before travelling?

Must be logistics/short notice. Wasn’t Dorrington playing on Saturday but was in the squad for Sunday? Probably couldn’t get the players up in time without prior notice

Should work on that, though. We had no striker on the bench yet Lankshear has been banging them in. A bit more thought and he could have been sent up with Dorrington.

The two keeping the bench thing must be due to either numbers or that they get a bonus for being named in the squad, but it is a waste

Over this last two seasons I’ve enjoyed watching a bit more of our youth teams on Spursplay. I’ve become a bit of a fan of Lyons-Foster. But find it difficult to pinpoint his best position.

He’s good on the ball, nice awareness and makes it look easy, not sure he’s tall enough for centre back. Would he fit the FB role in an Ange team? Or a midfielder?

The problem for Lyons-Foster is he’s 23 now. I’m not sure if they can play unregistered over 21’s in January but I know he wasn’t registered at the start of the season and wasn’t young enough to go on the B list so couldn’t play.

Maybe with Lloris and Dier leaving he’ll be registered for the 2nd half of the season unless Spurs sign someone else this month.

that's why you have show that you give youth players opportunities. The lads with potential want to see that there's a viable pathway to the first team.
Only if they are good enough. We are top of both youth leagues . How many will become first team squad members on a regular basis. Do well to get 2. Top youth teams do not equate to lots of first team players.
Apart from United class of 92 which was a one off, have a look at Wikipedia youth cup finals. They list all the players in the finals and you will be hard pressed to remember many of the names.

If he was any good he would be playing by now or gone to another club. They seem to be using him to help the younger players along. Other clubs have been using retired ex pros as over age players , Tom Huddleston at Man Utd is one.
Watching Philips on his Plymouth debut, he looks a different player, obviously going through the motions as under 21. Looks well up for it at Plymouth. Too long at under 21 does no one any good.
Jack Clarke was poor in our under 21, now one of the best in the Champ.

Yeah Clarke looks a good player for Sunderland. It’s only been one game for Phillips so I don’t want to get carried away but it would definitely be better for him to play regularly in the Championship then train with our first team and play for the under 21’s.
Even if he doesn’t set the world alight for Plymouth it will definitely aid his development playing regular men’s competitive football and the new manager has a good track record with developing young players in the England youth teams so this should be a good place for him to play.

I definitely don’t expect Lyons-Foster to be registered or get anywhere near the subs bench for Spurs’ 1st team. If he’s happy in his role helping the younger players along then let him carry on. Seems odd though that he hasn’t left to play in the football league.

Definite lack of ambition. After many years at that training ground a move to Accrington Stanley would kill him. Maybe he is looking to go into coaching.
Philips attitude in the Plymouth game was so much different to the under 21. He seems to just stroll through youth games.
Plymouth away to Leeds in next round of the cup. Good test for him.
