As long as no players due to start on Sunday, travel on a Thursday.

Why not?!

Might as well go balls out in actually winning something although try telling the players that!

I say 100%. Top 4 is going to be a bridge too far, imo. Winning the Europa League would be a magnificent achievement for the cub.

I'd be stoked and consider the year a success if we won a Europe League. We have seen this year we are not at the level to shrug off and laugh at the Europa League. 4th is a pipedream now, even the most one eyed supporter can see that, I'd rather win Europa and finish 6th/7th than finish 5th in EPL.

No.Thank.You.

I have nothing but resentment for this competition, it's simply counter productive. Just a complete waste of time.

5 out of our 7 losses have come after a EL game.

I'd rather finish 6th than 5th next year.

Definately. Top 4 slipped away yesterday, barring a complete failure by one of the teams above us ... i don't see that that will happen to the degree we need it to.

So yeah ... balls to the wall for the Europe iimo

Not much has changed if you look at the table as a 38-match marathon.

We need 75 points, or there-abouts. Wether we get those 25 points vs Norwich, Arsenal or Liverpool doesn't matter (much).

With the result last night we might have to win at Anfield, which isn't impossible you know.
It's probably something like 50-30-20% probability for the different outcomes.

And should we prioritize EL now? Like we haven't before?
We played 7 players on thursday that started yesterday. We don't even prioritize Premier League that much!

TBF it's a complete disgrace that players such as Eriksen are benched in both games. It's embarrassing!

According to most people on here performances have been terrible under Sherwood and yesterday was just a typical performance and we got what we deserved.

Yet people think we're going to go far in this competition lol

Just missing out on top 4 again, which is what will happen, will be a disappointing season. That will leave everyone depressed over the summer. If we win the Europa league everyone will be buzzing. We may lose 1 or 2 over the summer, but that would have happened anyway.

EL for me all the way.

BTW, this thread could do with a poll.

I think Top Four is a right off now

So if we're talking about whether we should focus on qualifying for the Europa via the league or actually winning the Europa while we're in it I'd say the answer is obvious

What I will say is I don't think we will win it even if we do focus all our attention in to it.

There are a lot of strong teams since the CL drop outs entered and you just know we'll lose a penalty shoot out before the final at some point.

If we can get past Dinipro we will at least have some exciting fixtures to look forward to - Benefica are European giants and if we some how were able to get to the final and win it would be a glorious achievement considering our trophy case is so barron in recent times.

I wouldn't be opposed to making the Europa the main focus now - but we have such a big squad it just seems pretty stupid to play so many players on a Thursday and then again on the Sunday (to the determent of both competitions when we have to the squad to play strong teams in both while resting and keeping match fit everyone)

Agree re Eriksen. He's our playmaker. We had no creativity without him.

I would rather finish 6th than 5th now as well but why not go all out to win it this year? It probably all we have got left to play for

No, no no no, we should play the development team in it and fuck it off and actually concentrate on what matters

We should try and win any competition we enter. Its the whole point of the game.

If and when we do get back in to the Champions League will people be moaning that it is costing us in the league?

If we don't finish top 4 this season then we 100% want to be in the Europa next season. It gives us another chance of Champions League qualification starting next term, that needs to be remembered.

Yeah screw it, let's go for it, personally I think top 4 is out of reach now, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool to play I can't see us making up a 6 point gap with our current performance level.

I just want to put out a team that wants to be playing for us, who puts in 100% effort and pushes for the extra gear when we are losing/ playing badly. I would drop so many players from our starting 11 at this present time.

I'd say we're a 20/1 shot for top four now.

I reckon we'd have to beat Arsenal and Liverpool to get it and most of the other teams we're expected to beat. All with the Europa League going on, I can't see it happening.

Must go and find out what odds you'd get for us to win the Europa!!

Remember that Sunderland have to beat Manchester City to take the League Cup Europa League place. Otherwise it will go down to 6th. If the FA Cup draw keeps Arsenal and Man City apart in the Semi Finals then that would be 7th place as well. We could well belly-flop into a Europa League place regardless of League performance.
