Should it be considered a massive failure if Liverpool finish above us this season?

The reason I say Liverpool is because out of all the sides in this league it's them that we have really been competing with over the last 6-7 seasons for 5th place, three times we have broken into the top four in that time, once denied by Chelsea, once finishing third and once finishing fourth and actually qualifying.

In comparison Liverpool have finished 2nd (with Suarez who is, in my opinion, world class) and this was the only time in that period they qualified for the CL, they have finished above us once in 6 seasons now, just once.

Now, I have to ask a serious question, we all know what happened last season with Leicester, such a thing only happens once in a blue moon, it's completely random, unlikely to happen again for a long time, however with Liverpool you can see how bad they have been in recent seasons, it's been a complete clusterfuck for them, they haven't even got a very decent squad in my opinion, they have some great forward players but have an awful defensive unit and yet somehow they are currently sitting 7 points ahead of us in 2nd, the question I am going to ask is this, if Liverpool were to finish ahead of us this season or actually win the league (please just no, please don't let that happen) then should we be concerned?

I mean, like I said earlier, they are essentially our direct competition for the 5th/4th place we are more often than not likely to occupy given the spending of the other sides in this league over the long term and yet despite all their problems and issues and despite us finishing above them for years now and seemingly being miles ahead of them last season they somehow look a much better unit than us now.

Is it too early to make this judgement? My mind is telling me yes because it's early in the season and I personally think they will get found out and start hitting a bad patch of form and will spiral out from there, but I said that last season about Leicester and look what happened, only difference being here is that if Liverpool won it, that would be disastrous for us, they are already a huge club in terms of world appeal, if they won the PL and got back into the CL the likelihood of them leaving it any time soon would be minimal, especially with Klopp in charge.

Which brings me to my next question, what is it exactly that has turned their fortunes around so much and apparently so fast? The manager is the only thing I can think of and it's him that worries me the most for the following reason.

I think he is better than Poch. I know this is going to catch some hate but I really do believe he is and I think the fact he has turned them around so fast in such a short period of time from the clusterfuck they were before is quite impressive.

Despite all our managerial changes and problems at spurs we were always around 5th, I mean we even finished above pool with AVB and Sherwood, it took Poch two seasons to have us in a title race, which in itself is impressive but last season the quality of the league was quite shocking and I personally feel like it flattered us, however, regardless of that we have shown slight signs of regression in terms of performances this season in my opinion and Liverpool have so far shown large signs of progression.

I mean, in his second season, if things stay as they are now, Klopp would have taken pool from 8th to 2nd, that's a six place swing, if we take Poch's best placed finish with us, which would be third now, that would represent a two place swing at best, not only that but Poch hasn't even beaten our best league points total of 72 yet.

I am not trying to drill Poch down, I still believe he is the best manager we have had in recent years and honestly is the best we are likely to get at this current time, the players believe in him that much is evident with all the recent signings of contracts and he is dedicated to the club from what I can tell so that is all good with me, I just want to make it clear, I am NOT saying I want him to be gone or sacked or anything of that nature, I am happy with Poch at our club, I just believe that if Klopp actually achieves a second place finish with pool this year then that would be a hugely impressive achievement given how they have been in recent seasons and would, in my opinion represent a real failure on our part.

Like I said though, this is all early days so far, Liverpool could likely regress, we could likely hit great form again and smash our points total for this season and all will be well in the world, it's really too early to say anything right now, but my question remains, should it be considered a failure on part of our players and management if Liverpool finish above us?

I just want to add, that I fucking hate Liverpool and this post may be fuelled by an underlying fear of seeing those absolute bellends finishing above us again.

No.

The fact that Liverpool consistently spend at least 30% more on player wages than Spurs do suggests that if the two managers operate at par, Liverpool should consistently finish comfortably ahead of us.

I know there's more to it than just money, but if you ignore the finances you'll get the wrong answer more often than not.

Liverpool have a great manager, no European football and a squad at least equal to ours, if not better in certain departments - which is no surprise considering they also possess greater resources than we do. There would be no shame in them finishing above us.

I genuinely have never given the remotest shite about Liverpool, and I don't think I ever will.

Without being too philosophical, our biggest competition has always been with ourselves.

Klopp is an excellent manager but the lack of European football has helped them massively.

Its no coincidence that the first and second places in the league are occupied by two teams with Champions League budgets and no European football this season. It also makes this season a bit of an anomaly as usually you only have one team with a Champions League budget not in the Champions League and even then they normally have Europa League football to keep them fatigued.

In my opinion us finishing below Liverpool this season wouldn't be a failure in itself at all. It would actually be a massive achievement if we were to finish above them or Chelsea in a season when we have the burden of midweek football and they don't. If Liverpool were to finish outside of the Top 4 this season (which I don't think they will) then I think that would be a bigger failure for them, as in addition to the extra rest between games, Klopp also had a 10 month headstart on the managers of 3 of their rivals (Chelsea, City and Utd). So they should be more cohesive and settled than anyone bar Arsenal and ourselves and they should be fresher than anyone bar Chelsea. If they don't finish in the Top 4 then they've screwed up.

They consistently spend more than us and, no doubt, pay bigger wages, so they should finish above us.
No failure at all.

No.

If anything it says more about their underachievement in recent seasons rather than their overachievement this year. With the money they've spent over the last few years they would expect to be about where they are now.

I think you're also doing the quality of their squad a major disservice. Their front 4 of Coutinho, Mane, Firmino and Lallana is probably the best and most dynamic attacking unit in the league. It doesn't matter if their defence is shite because more often than not they're just goign to score more goals than their opponents

We are about the 6th highest spenders in the league and the way the game is now anything above 6th could be considered 'over achievement.'

I think Liverpool are title contenders so - no - definitely not.

As has been said, money talks and they have finally started buying players on huge wages who are decent at playing football.

They also have a great manager.

I think for the next few years we will be competing with Arsenal and Manchester United for 4th place.

Who knows though, maybe we'll take another step forward through Edwards turning into a Bale or finding another Alderweireld or Alli in the market.

No.

Liverpool pay out £60m a year more in wages and turnover around £100m more than us each year (as of the 2014-15 season) they have underachieved in recent seasons and we have over achieved on what you would expect financially. We are still so far behind the top 5 financially that is amazing we compete as well as we do IMO

Source for the wages etc

No, we shouldn't be meassuring ourselves against what others achieve.

I personally still see last season as a success, 3rd place, one of the highest GD in my memory and loved watching us swarm over teams and produce some of the best collective team play I've seen from a Spurs side. This is an improvement on previous seasons and should be appluaded yet somehow people see it as a failure because we fnished behind Leciester & Scum.

We can only influence what we do and all the time we're progressing and moving forward as a club then I'm happy (y)

It depends on what position they will finish. We still have half a season to go and if they should suddenly capitulate and end up finishing 5th or 6th and still be above us then it would definitely be a failure. As oppose to both of us finishing in the top 4 with them ahead which then wouldn't be considered a failure in my book.

No especially if we win a cup. If we came 9th and won the FA cup I would be happier than coming 2nd.

As people have said Liverpool have greater resources than us at least until we get the new stadium up, what is important however is retaining our best players, manager and developing our young players like Winks and Edwards as best as possible so we are in a position to take advantage of any rival that fucks up like Leicester did to the Prem last season.
