Think you might be wrong as Barkley turns 24 in December and that is the cut off point for compensation. So next summer, as a 24 year old he could leave for nothing.

This is a good point, and came up with Berahino.

It was understood in that case that a player has to be 24 at the start of the season, in order to be a completely free agent domestically.

Perhaps someone can shed light on the matter?

I remember the first time I watched Barkley play and I thought wow what talent.

This kid is going to surprise a few people.
I thought the same - problem is that was a few years ago now and he hasn't kicked on the way we would've expected. I'm very on the fence still.

There is an impasse with Swansea. Spurs are the money men in this scenario - they cough up for Barkley, Everton cough up for Siggy. Spurs, as we know, won't be sending a big wedge to Everton. They'll be structuring a deal, which suits neither Everton nor Swansea in turn. This'll go down to deadline day, or thereabouts.

Surely both Swansea and Everton will expect installments? Plus won't we have a sell on clause for Siggy?

Poch's number one target with less than 12 months on his contract left. Get it done Levy!

Yeah and Everton have quoted £50m, Barkley is the key in all this as long as he doesn't sign a new contract then the power lay with us.

Hopefully the Everton Chairman is not as stubborn as Jeremy Peace @ WBA. We offered £24m for Berahino, Peace wouldn't budge, Berahino hardly played for them again and was sold to Stoke for £12m in the January window (to avoid him leaving on a free). They lost themselves £12m over stubbornness. Bad business!

The Everton chairman was a fair sized shareholder at the Arsenal until a year ago so I wouldn't be surprised if they knew each other.
I know we think they are the enemy but at that level they are bound to have contact from time to time.

Isn't Kenwright still the chairman though? I believe Mushiri (the new 'money' guy) only owns 49% still and even if he has become majority Kenwright is still Chairman.

I think this might point to a deal being struck fairly soon. Someone has fed the Echo this new figure, which is some way off 50 million. I don't think it'll be resolved in the next week or so, but this feels like a club using stealth articles to slowly soften their stance
Yeah, I hope so. They must know that no-one will come close to the 50 they first wanted, plus Koeman seems like he just wants this resolved and fast.

This situation is very different to the Berahino one. Peace and Pulis were both pissed with Berahino's attitude and that we had unsettled him yet they both seemed to want to keep him, only losing him for a ridiculous fee. It does appear that Everton are very much resigned to - or even want to - sell Barkley, especially as they are wanting to bring in Siggy.

So let's get this straight. Everton started the summer demanding no less than 50m for Barkley and now they're saying that they won't sell him "on the cheap" and want no less than 30m!?

Levy must be gleefully rubbing his hands together. 30m for Barkley, in today's market, is a bit of a steal if you ask me and surely more in line with what we always wanted to pay.

You can imagine the negotiation....

EFC: 50m?
Levy: 30m
EFC: 45m?
Levy: 30m
EFC: 40m?
Levy: 30m
EFC: Fine, 30m?
Levy: 24m

He's a bastard but let's face it, he's the master at getting the best deal.

Yes, but the fact that it's so obviously dependent on each transfer, and that it's Spurs coughing up the initial payment suggests it'll be lower than the other clubs want.

I don't think Everton are cash short - they've just recouped almost all the money they spent with Lukaku. It's more about needing a squad place freeed up by selling Barkley, to bring Siggy in.
