Surely the agent has a straight choice though, either hold up the transfer to the point where it is then cancelled and earn nothing, or accept whats on offer and still get a nice pay day

How can the agent hold the deal up ? My only guess is by stopping his client, Soldado, from signing a contract with us etc

It's radio marca pinch of salt and all that:

Radio Marca: If the agents do not accept terms, Soldado will still go to the US and there will be no signing of Postiga #vcfnordic

Hans Kristian Lange@mulu83

Radio Marca saying that clubs agree on 30 in 3 installments, but the club is pessimistic wrt an agreement with agents #vcfnordic

Surely Levy would just cop the 700k fee after all this.

Its radio Marca, the same Marca thats going on about Bale and spouts shit for Madrid. Do me a favour....

I don't understand how agents are entitled to any comission of transfer fees when they do not own - partly or whole (at least in this case) - the asset they are selling.

Is it part of Valencia's agreement with Soldado when they signed him? That his agent would get a % of whatever potential transfer fee?

It's just I can't see how the agent has the power to halt this transfer unless they are legally entitled to comission, and if so, it should be a set amount and not open to negotiation :S

The Valencia chairman has said the deal with us for Soldado is all agreed, the only thing left is this payment with the agent. If they agree he signs if not he goes out to the U.S. Another game of chicken it seems this time with agent.

I could see us being pissed if they send him off to America because of an agent's Fee. A 30million deal all going tits up because every side but ours wants to be Billy Big Balls.

If the club has such a problem then they need to be the ones to stand up to football agents. Its a shame that everyone is so emotionally invested in their club that they will always come back for more, regardless how rank the sport gets. Even if they went down the route of 'sports entertainment' like pro wrestling, where the results are predetermined, you'd still sell tickets.

Don't worry guys, in 50 years agents won't exist in their current form.
The whole thing will be done via online crowd-sourcing platforms where information travels in seconds, where every 'approved agent' has a viewable log of all of the contact they have ever made with any party from 'day zero', and where fans can pledge funds towards any transfer, should the clubs formally agree to a deal.
Physical meetings will still take place, but far less often and they will mostly be treated as a red flag/negative signal that suggests the deal is in trouble of collapsing or that more shady/corrupt forces are at work.
The market for agents will become much more competitive as the sport continues to develop in emerging markets, and so reducing agents costs in the long run will partly be achieved via tech changes.

Sounds like it's the agent holding it up again, they really are the cancer of the game.

Something really really needs to be done about this.

Agents are just glorified advisers (obviously more to it) and commission rates set for sales. Something like 3% of the transfer fee.

Estate agents for players. Not too fond of either.

Agents never own the asset, they take a fee for working on behalf of their client.

Yep. One of the many reasons I admire Paul Scholes was that as far as I know he didn't have an agent. Just had a solicitor to help with contract negotiations. That's all you need really and I think football would be far better if agents were simply removed from the game ( never gonig to happen obviously).

Would help reduce player egos too. Agents pump some of them full of chump. See David Bentley et. al for exhibits.

Work for the player, demand money from the clubs.
I just can't get my mind around how agents can demand money from clubs for deals to happen,
you'd think the only thing they were entitled to was a cut of the player's income.

Although its easy to bash agents, they do have a purpose but like most things in life they are not regulated correctly hence the shit that goes on every year.

Speak to an old pro who used to deal with clubs direct (no agent) and they will tell you how they got done by the club as they had no advisers to help them.

Agreed. The dispute is between Valencia and the agents regarding how to split the fee.

Spurs could put the payment in escrow and let them fight it out, freeing up Soldado to sign personal terms. Unless his agent is being a twat, advising Soldado to not sign anything until the agent gets paid.

So if a club makes £30m from the work of an agent, why shouldn't they pay him? He may have made the deal happen, might have saved the club another £10m in wages..

Makes sense to me, just needs regulating.
