Referee 'swarming' - can nothing be done about this?

I find it repugnant (see Barca last night for a shameful example) hence when i read about local league refs moaning about intimidation on and off the field it doesnt surprise me at all as this kind of behaviour filters down IMO. Makes me want to watch rugby (see link for an example of one guy who has got it right )

Refs need to grow some balls & take control.

+ only team captain should be allowed to address the ref, like rugby

Rules were brought in a couple of seasons ago to make it that way.
Unfortunately referees have not taken control and the FA has done sweet FA about it.

Same with swearing - supposed to be a yellow card offensive for abusive language, but I've yet to see a PL player booked for it.

It would be great if Refs had microphones like in Rugby and the tv audience and stadium could hear what was said between players and the ref.

Yup. As I said, refs need to grow balls & take control & power back. They have the means but they don't use them idk why

Nothing will be done as the football authorities will always pander to the clubs and players ahead of the refs.

It's such an easy thing to implement and yet they do nothing about it.

Can't see it ever changing.

They have, though, as @WalkerboyUK pointed out - refs appear to 'choose' not to use their powers. Or when the do, very lightly

When that rule was implemented it was clear that there was no backing of the refs to actually use it. The fact that they used it so little suggests to me that they had been told to only use it in extreme circumstances, otherwise why wouldn't they use it?

I'd also be curious as to how a ref addresses being surrounded by even half a dozen players - does he just get his yellow card out and start waving it around his head? Is he expected to recognise them all and address them one at a time?

What I would like is a system where a team can be booked - the ref would walk to the dugout, explain to the relevant manager and 4th official and book the team. Two bookings, the other team are awarded a goal. Three, game abandoned, forfeit.

It is simple to control they just don't have the balls to do it. Every player who does it, whether that be 2, 3, or half a dozen, should be booked immediately. Anyone who swears at the ref or the decision he makes should be red carded. Games would be ruined for a few weeks yes, but it would stamp it out very quickly.

Exactly.

It works in rugby where the players are actually aggressive rather than the puffed-up primadonnas we have in football.

Whether it's yellow cards or pushing play back by 10 yards, if implemented properly it would stop it very quickly. But it will need to actually be backed by the authorities otherwise it's completely worthless.

We just need a video ref up in some booth and allowing him to watch replays...

Seriously... Job solved.... No need for 2 more refs at the goal. No need goal line tech....

The answer is so simple yet FIFA will never employ it... When every other sport is using it.

Not sure how that helps the player swarming.

Also as a rugby fan I can tell you now that video-reffing comes with more than its fair share of problems.

It's hard to stop this ref swarming... Tensions are high in the game. Especially if it's an important match.

No need to swarm him if his decision can be overruled. Manager calls for a video replay. Players wait for a fair result.

I always want the ref to stand his ground (I know they are instructed too back away).

Wasn't a ref microphoned up quite a few years ago, for a Millwall V Arsenal game, seem to remember Tony Adams chirping away in his ear the whole game.

Yep -

I hate all the abuse refs get. Players routinely spoon shots wide, or over the bar, but after a match its always the ref who gets the blame. I'm sure half the players don't realize that they wouldn't have a living without the refs.
