Thank Doc, we needed the positive response. Still think we faded and looked very leggy 2nd half vs the Gooners and that was Poch’s training regime sapping energy. Otherwise the result should have gone our way and GLC’s late intro changed the game back in our favour. We’ll be fitter and stronger in September and will outlast teams like these. Performances will improve. Players will be committed. New ones integrated. A lot of things to be positive about. COYS!

i'm not an Arsenal fan nor a West Ham fan.
By the way, has anyone seen Arsenal's run in? Combined with Europa Cup it has the potential to be a nightmare for them. Injuries and fatigue could be a problem.

If we are fighting with them for 3rd or 4th, it will prove pivotal as the majority of our tough games are at home and we should be much healthier then.

Looking at our squad we have plenty of reasons to be cheerful. Our midfield and attacking options are up there with the best in Europe this season: Kane, Son, Ndombele, Eriksen, Lo Celso, Lucas, Alli and Lamela...that's a disgustingly good set of options. We have pace, technique, power, nous; a bit of everything except a tricky dribber a la Zaha. If Poch can actually find a system that suits our players, we really should be a shoo-in for 3rd place (obviously we won't be up there with City and Pool). If we had a top DM and a proper RB we'd have such a brilliant squad this year.

Something else to be cheerful about is the state of our rivals:

- Man Utd look horribly thin in attacking/creative options. They really shouldn't be a threat this year.
- Chelsea are playing some nice stuff but they're conceding so many goals and are relying a huge amount on their youth. They will have an inconsistent year.
- Arsenal have such a good forward line but are stupidly top heavy. They'll be our biggest threat but will also drop silly points.

With the players we have, even if Poch is dicking around with the formation, we should comfortably be finishing above at least 2 of these teams.
Spot on and great post.
Now erisken is staying our squad looks bloody strong and moving forwards next summer the ‘rebuild’ shouldn’t be too compliacated really, wed just need:

•RB*depending on how Foyth and kwp do
•CB x2? If Toby and jan leave (this will be the hardest part to replace by far but we bought Sanchez and Foyth for a reason and hopefully one of toby and jan May stay one more year after this.
•CDM??? Depends on formation and if dier comes back to his best or if ndombele is used more as a DM than a CM
•AM/ST : Depending on how we are setting up and how our attacking players do this season and if Sessengon is played at LB or LW, and most importantly if erisken goes then we will need another top top attacking player either an AM like dybala or a ST to go up with Kane.

So situation depending we’d likely only really need another 3 top signings next season and then we basically would have a squad near as we could get to challenging city & lpool. Exciting times.

I'd say we most likely need 4.

- 100% need a RB: KWP is talented but should be a Davies-like backup option. When you watch players like Pereira at Leicester, TAA , Wan Bissaka (defensively), and Walker, it pains me how much better they are than any of our RB options. This should be priority no. 1.

- CB: We need to bring someone in to replace Toby and/or Jan.

- AM: Even though Lo Celso is kind of an Eriksen replacement, we can't rely on 1 player for all of our creativity. If we don't go for a more direct replacement like Fernandez, we should bring in a tricky wide player who can actually beat a man 1v1 in the mould of Zaha/Pepe.

- DM: If Dier doesn't come back to fitness/form and Skipp doesn't break through, we'll desperately need a DM, and arguably we should buy one regardless.

Agree with pretty much everything in this thread. From the Poch presser on friday through to the NLD which, despite being a missed opportunity (for both sides tbf), it really feels like a corner has been turned.

I have a lot of faith in this squad, it excites me to see what we can do with it. Glimpses of Ndombele and Lo Celso are very promising. We have Eriksen, Dele and Vertonghen reintegrated.

Dier, Foyth, Davies and Sessegnon to come in and provide competition in our problem areas.

I really think we're going to be a real powerhouse once we get up to speed, I expect some big results in some big games, especially at home.

Except we're not, since we won at home to Newcastle last season, so actually one point worse off.

However I agree that it was very important not to lose against the scum, as they'll probably be our biggest rivals for the top 4.

Hopefully the players settle down now that the window is closed, and Poch and the squad finds some positive energy, spirit and togetherness again.
Yep but we also lost lots of games to lower table teams that we normally have not in the past . Our top six battles though have been bad away from home . Nicking points off the top six teams needs to continue.

16/17 is literally the only season we haven't lost stupid games to weaker opponents.

That Newcastle game was the real costly one. Otherwise it's been a decent start results wise. Now we will have to win every 'winnable game' e.g beat every team outside of the top 6 twice and win pretty much every game at home bar City from now on if we do have ambitions of winning the league.

I think we'll likely be third. We've got enough about us to be better than Arsenal when we return to full strength.

Having a listen to the new Tifo podcast. Only a few minutes in but it sounds quite spot on about us, although I'm not sure about their summary of the game on Sunday. Worth a listen.

If you're going to call the thread 'Reasons to be Cheerful, then I think it only fair I respond in Ian Dury fashion.

I have faith in the entire squad, so my reasons to be cheerful this season are as follows...

Tanguy Ndombele;
Lo Celso and our Dele;
Poch (calmer on the telly);
Jan's back.
Christian is remaining;
Sess has started training;
Erik needs restraining
(near Jack).

Our last-gasp hero Moura;
Harry our top goal scorer;
Toby with his calm aura;
and Dav.
Hugo with the gloves on;
God, I fucking love Son;
Et Moussa, il est tres bon,
le brave.

Winksy keeps it ticking;
Eric enjoys kicking;
And Dan with his man sticking;
Ben too.
Gazza, our back-up keeper;
Foyth, a future sweeper;
Skipp, who plays best deeper
('tis true).

Reasons to be cheerful.
Reasons to be cheerful
Reasons to be cheerful
Reasons to be cheerful. One, two three.

:singing:
Love it. That played in my head with Ian Dury’s voice..

Reason to be cheerful today is that the transfer window is closed and Eriksen, Jan & Toby is still around. Glad it's international break for now and Ndombele and Sessegnon hopefully are fit when it's over

1000% spot on mate.
Think we are well set for this season and then next season these 4 positions are the priority to complete our re-build.

1,000,000% incorrect until we actually see Foyth play there, which was Poch plan before injury.
He’s but the window is shut now and even if Foyth isn’t great there (which I’m sure he will be as he has done wel there in previous games and for Argentina) then we also have KWP who’s looked good enough to play there for us this season, certainly no worse than trippier who was our first choice RB in the champions league final, we’ve added some real quality in midfield so I’d say we are fairly well set.

Obviously we can always improve the squad and that is what we will do next summer.

Another reason to be cheerful is that the highly embarrassing LastWordOnSpurs twitter account has been restricted or suspended or whatever, presumably because of the incessant self-retweeting and spam. Note also that, since this development, Ricky Sacks has suddenly stopped retweeting his own tweets.

I'm open to the idea of Foyth at RB and I think he could prove to be a decent option there, especially this season when we're thin in that position. However, having seen the way he struggled against pace when playing there for Argentina, I think it would be very optimistic to pin our hopes on him as our long term, 1st choice RB. If we want a 'modern fullback' who can rampage down the flanks like those of Liverpool and City, Foyth won't be our man.

Do you honestly think RB isn't a priority position for us next summer?
