The first half formation of him in front of a back 3 was awful. His special ability is to seamlessly drop back into defence when needed, but he can't if it is packed with CBs.

Once we went to a back 4, I think he really shone. He dropped back into the middle of defence, he covered for Aurier as he went forward, he acted as an attacking pivot and even had a good long range shot.
It was a Dier greatest hits show. I hope mourinho noticed what was happening.

Not motm though, cos of that first half. I gave it to Moura as he never gave up and had a great desire to score.

PS Jan coming off was one of the saddest things I've seen at the club. He was absolutely destroyed by this substitution.
Jan’s walk off the pitch was Ricky Villa circa 1981

The errors were really not the sort he usually makes - I’ve never seen him be so hesitant to come off his line as the Ings chance (if anything the opposite is more often the problem) and he doesn’t usually parry the ball into trouble. I’ll write it off as a bad day at the office
how many bad days at the office do you need to have, were you're just bad at your job?

First rating is for the crowd. My first ga. E at the new ground, it was far too quiet. Crowd 2.

Southampton played a very high line, and we sat deep. Because of verts lack of pace? I can't say, but it invited them into our half constantly and pinned our wing backs into literally a back 5. Better when we went to a back 4. Tactical masterstroke.. Well Southampton were all over us.

Hugo.. Seems to have lost the ability to come off his line. Caused us real problems. I had to check if Vorm wasn't in goal.

Verts was looking like a 'masters' retired player amongst current pros. Not good.

Tanganga had some very good defensive moments as well as a couple blips, but much better when verts went off.

Toby seems to have regained his passion and is really leading us with said passion.

Aurier was OK, sess was timid. Sess again better when in the back 4. Couple of nice runs and couple of good penetrative balls.

Tanguy. Soft like a twinkie filling.

Dier... Not great.

Winksy...seeming to thrive under Jose and is becoming more adventurous. Last 15 he was crucial.

Moura. Effort galore. Was important in that regard.

Son...seemed isolated due to his own miscomings of running poorly with the ball. Blind alleys and all that.

Gedson had a good show. Decent.

Alli came on at the right time and whether it was him that inspired the up pace or at the right time where we had to change the tempo and desire, he did good from the moment he crossed the line. Alli and winks joint mom.

Cocerned by tactics tonight.

Curate's Egg performance., a bit good but mainly bad. 'Excellent in parts my Lord'

Aurier...........6..........Not as addled as usual
Tanganga....7.........Hard boiled for one so young.
Toby..............7.........A good egg once again.Binds things together.
Verts..............5.........You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs This one's broken.
Sess................6.........Treading on eggshells at times but coming to the boil nicely
Winks............7+......Game of two halves. Eggcellent second half, and good ball leading up to the first goal
Dier................4..........Think he's gone off.
Ndombele...5..........Eggplosive but as sure as eggs is eggs he will make it. Eventually
Son.................5..........Scrambled mostly
Moura...........6...........A bit runny as usual but poached a goal

One of the strangest games I've seen in a long time. We were truly awful for the first 70 mins. Playing some sort of 3-5-2 formation that Mourinho seemed to suggest was due to the lack of personnel available. Not sure I agree with that tbh but I get that we were missing key players due to injuries etc (Kane, Lo Celso, Lamela, Davies).

Ultimately Son and Lucas as a front 2 didn't work. Saints high press was mostly forcing us to play long and they simply couldn't hold onto the ball in any way which meant that we constantly surrendered possession to Soton. On the rare occasions that we beat their high press we looked threatening and the 1st goal came quite easily, even if there was a big deflection. The other issue was that both Lucas and Son tried too hard and were too greedy in the final 3rd, often just running into defenders when they could've passed.

In the end it was the switch to a back 4 and bringing Dele on as a false 9 that changed the game. In the last 15 mins we looked a totally different team and Saints simply couldn't cope with us. Lovely goal from Lucas and a sublime pass from Dele into Son to get the pen - which was definitely NOT a dive.

Lloris - 6 - Some good saves but his parry happy work in the 1st half led to easy tap-in for Long.
Aurier - 7 - Solid all round performance.
Toby - 8 - As above
Tanganga - 7 - Consistently good at the moment. Could've shown Ings onto his left foot for their 2nd goal but he didn't do a lot wrong. Credit to Ings for me. Also should've been a tactical foul on Redmond by 1 of at least 3 players in the lead up.
Vertonghen - 5 - He's just not the same player and seems to have lost more than just a step of pace. His walk round the pitch after being subbed was heart breaking. I think he may have just realised that he's no longer got it at this level.
Sess - 7 - Decent. Got forward well for the 1st goal and worked hard. Lacks confidence though and it shows.
Dier - 5 - He looks like a CB playing out of position in CDM. Slow and ponderous. We need to move on from him or move him back into defence.
Winks - 7 - Good, getting better every game. Tough 1st half being asked to do too much. Grew into the game 2nd half. Usual high work rate. Tidy passing.
Ndombele - 6.5 - Has such talent and ability but clearly not fully fit still. 60-70 mins every game is better than a full 90 followed by 2 games off so let's give him time. We know we have a world class CM in him but we're gonna have to be patient.
Son - 6 - Not good for the large majority. Some nice touches but some wayward passes. Greedy on the ball, ran into defenders multiple times. He's in a poor run of form right now and yet he's scored in 4 straight games. Weird. Did well to win the pen and score it despite that wonky run up.
Lucas
- 7.5 - Much like Son he ran down some blind alleys, into defenders and struggled to contribute but unlike Son sometimes, Lucas is always a team player. He works his tail off constantly. Took his goal superbly and deserves more slack from our fanbase IMO.

Gedson
- 7.5 - Great cameo. Lots of energy and effort. Apparently won 15 duals! Powerful running, breaking lines like Sissoko does but with more control. Major potential right there.
Dele - 8.5 - Absolutely awesome IMO. Totally changed the game and frankly he should be MOTM because without him coming on, we don't win the game. Him playing as a false 9 is the answer to our no striker problem. Dropping into that space, sliding passes into Lucas, Son and Bergwijn will work. Desperately hoping that Jose sees that and starts that way vs Villa.
Sanchez - N/A
