I think it really broke him when he left us, we loved him, he loved it here.

He left, his marriage fell apart and so did his form.

I would love him back, he wouldn't play much but probably feature more than the likes of Paulinho, Capoue and Stambouli, especially if we are in the EL again.

But the main reason I would like him back is because his mentality is so positive and the young attacking midfielders could learn so much off him regarding positioning and shooting.

Would Pochettino want to work with such a big character though?

Personally I think he'll go back to Ajax.

I think he intentionally left in attempt to salvage his marriage, don't think it was entirely us kicking him out. Frankly, we didn't even play his replacement (Siggy) in his position.

Furthermore, there's no denying his physical problems are beyond mentality or a broken heart. Even from just looking at him skin-deep, the guy simply has an accelerated aging rate. No doubt about it.

His ego is not a problem, he celebrated harder than anyone when Hamburg beat Dortmund in Dortmund and he didn't play a minute. The problem is his fitness in a training regime in which many players from both Spurs and Saints have said is pretty brutal. Would be very surprised to see Rafa willingly subject himself to that at this stage in his career, especially if he's not going to play much on top of it.

Watching those videos really made me miss Rafa. What a cracking player he was for us.. Maybe we can re-sign him and use him for games vs Arsenal?

On a more serious note, I think I'd rather live with the memory of the player he was. Having watched a fair bit of Hamburg this season I think it's fair to say that he's aged quite a bit since leaving us.

I suggested this (bring back VdV) on another thread a few weeks ago. And, probably rightly, got shot down in flames! But my point at the time was that the age structure at Spurs is arse about face. The "youngsters" have taken over, and the "stars" are benched. In the normal evolution of a PL club/team its the other way around. I got no problems with that BTW.
Rather than promote our even younger, undoubtedly gifted, youngsters I think we should be looking at older (special) players who might be happy, in the twilight of their careers, to be part of something exiting, be prepared to play bit parts, and pass on their nouce. I don't want this current young team broken up for more "mega star" magnificent 7 types.
Just think of a few games this year where VdV in the last 20 mins might have made the difference.
I am donning my flak jacket.

Although I liked him enormously, I think it is worth remembering standard investment advice:

Absolute legend. Hope he comes back in some capacity later but not as a player he's past it now.

Ok ill take this one. As much as he was an instant fans favourite (I loved him and was gutted when he left) hes what? 2 years older & has always had fitness issues. always looked tired at the 60min mark.
Call it a long shot but i dont think he will fit into MoPo's high pressing game.
I really wish it could be different :(
this.

Loved him. Ill take him....at NYCFC, just so i get to see him light it up again and in person this time as Yankee Stadium is a 20 minute train ride from me. But at Spurs? No, he's past it, sadly.

Just no. Don't go back, don't ruin the memories, just love him for the legend he was and remember him forever as truly world class when he was with us.

Heart says "fuck yes!", brain says "hell no". Sadly he isn't anywhere near the player he was with us, he wouldnt have the same freedom under Poch and I don't think he would be a fan of our current system. Best to remember him how he was.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but that's kind of ridiculous, I don't get what the point in posting the video is. We all know how good he was, but that's past tense. I can throw in a montage of Pele from when he was good, but it doesn't mean that we should sign him in his current state. Look at Gerrard's situation with Liverpool for example..
Because he was one of my favourite Spurs players and the video shows a lot of why. Sorry if he's not up to your standards though, or Pele's for that matter.

And we wonder why people stop posting

I don't think my post was that aggressive. As I've said before, we all know he was a great player, but looking at a video at what someone was capable of years ago is slightly irrelevant when discussing what they're capable of in their current condition..

This is what I don't get about you @yankspur you've previously stated that you only started following spurs since the days of Clint Dempsey which would mean that you didn't get to see the VDV days? Yet you say that you "loved him"

Whats that all about???

I thought the days of me getting names on the back of jerseys were long gone, until Rafa arrived. The first player I got on a jersey since, probably Sheringham. Loved him. Such a great player, in such a great team too.

Unfortunately he wouldn't be able to compete in our team now, although he could probably show Eriksen how to take a corner, and Chadli how to stay cool as ice 3 yards from goal so he doesn't miss any more sitters. I think in a coaching role he would be great, especially for our younger players, and although he wouldn't cut it, he's exactly the type of player this team is lacking. He's a pure winner with massive experience. Great player. Great wife too.

I've been over this shit countless times when spurs bear says shit. This is the last and final time I'll say it and I am not gonna repeat myself again. Started following spurs around 2010 or so from a far. Started looking at forums and really closely following when Dempsey was signed.

Amazing, amazing player for us. But we should leave it as that. Can see nothing but disaster and disappointment if he comes back to us. Hopefully he stays clear of the EPL and goes back to Holland or something. I want him to be remembered as the Champions League quality player who played for Tottenham, not for returning to the EPL to play 8 games for Sunderland in a relegation battle.
