Not sure why we got rid of Reggie tbh, he had so much more about him than Sess, i have been trying to see it with him but he just has nothing about him in terms of confidence or belief or passion…i know he is young but most younger players play without fear, the lad is petrified.

This seemed an unpopular opinion in the summer...but I agree...Reggie was nowhere near perfect, but he played with some purpose and dynamism at times...

Time running out for 'young' Sess. He is improving but he just doesn't seem to have that bullish attitude and physicality to own that left flank like Rose used to do or like Walker did on the other side. When he speaks he still seems very shy and not confident and his performances tend to reflect that a bit, they're still a little timid.

It’s not just him tho, Sanchez, & to some extent, Davies & Dier are similar.
It does my head in seeing opponents smashing into our forwards from all angles, only for our defenders to stand off like rabbits in the headlights.

Yeah I've said a few times, I get why Reguilon infuriated a lot of fans but he had pace/running ability and was able to get quickly forward in support of attacks and in behind defences. Yes he had little composure or end product when it came to the decisive moments, but he got himself into better positions more frequently than any of the other options we have seen under Conte.

People keep saying Conte wingbacks need quality delivery etc. and skill and end product, that's true but I think that's just the bonus on top. Much more important I opine is running and ball carrying ability and aggressive positioning, all combining to stretch the play. Hakimi has end product but on top of the ability to motor up and down the flank with/without the ball. Victor Moses has been a bang average PL player all his career, but again provided legs up and down the pitch and carried the ball. Marcos Alonso has little pace, but is/was extremely aggressive positionally in where he'd pop up and with a sweet left foot to go with that.

It's night and day with our wingback options. Doherty arrives at the back post sometimes. Emerson, no comment. Perisic I'm disappointed with, I expected an ultra aggressive player who'd be up against the opposition offside line and popping up in ultra advanced areas as much as he could. I don't care what he has done for Conte previously, I hope after Xmas things click but so far he offers zero in general play, quite timid, and positions himself way too deep, I constantly think he is 10-15 metres from where he should be. Sessegnon I've always called a wimp, hasn't really got much pace, but in his defence he is the only one of the options who provides some semblance of off the ball runs and support play to the attacking unit and ability to stretch the game.

Back to Reguilon, fair enough if you wanted to upgrade him. But I assumed his raw materials were the starting point for a wingback, we'd want that on either flank and hopefully add the technical quality on top. I can't believe we went into the new season with less pace and running power/ability in our wingback options than last season.

I just don't get what people see in Sessengon. People keep saying he's got talent, he's young, just low on confidence etc but I've not really seen any evidence of talent.. he isn't a great crosser or finisher, he isn't a great defender, he isn't skillful or quick, he definitely isn't strong. He isn't even that young. For me he's failed to make the step up from the championship and sadly just isn't good enough at this level. It would be nice if he proves me wrong, but I don't think he will. Emerson isn't good enough either by the way, but at least he puts himself about a bit, makes up for the lack of technical ability with effort.

We have to ride with him for now and hope Udogie makes the position his own next season. Sess should deputise as we can't keep shifting HG players if Conte wants to shop in an Italian market.

Enough with the sess / Emerson experiment, it’s getting harder to defend Conte the more he plays these 2 . We won’t move forward until we upgrade 4/5 of our defence .
I think Sess is clearly the 2nd/rotational option but have played a bit extra now with Perisic being used in attack due to our injury crisis up front.

We have already signed Udogie who will join next summer.

Given his performances, or lack thereof this season, I would gladly exchange him with Mitoma from Brighton. I just don't think Ryan has what is needed to cut it here.

He makes some excellent runs off the ball as a wing back but he’s currently not good enough on it. It’s annoying because his movement at times is genuinely excellent.

His crossing isn’t great, his cutbacks are better but not frequent enough.

His 2 biggest problems are:

1. He lacks aggression. He just plays like a passive, frightened schoolboy too often. He could do with Danny Rose mentoring him.

2. Technically he is a really poor dribbler. He doesn’t create any separation with the ball when he runs with it. He’s rigid and very straight line. He needs to learn to use body feints, stepovers, to separate his body from the ball to gain a yard or beat a defender. Added to this he struggles with changing speed. He either runs full pelt or runs slowly. He doesn’t seem to be able to change his speed effectively as he runs at people.

Unless he can significantly improve on the 2 big problems I’ve listed I don’t think he will prove good enough.

I think he’s been given enough opportunities now and just isn’t cutting it.

A concern as we let Reggy go so only have him and an ageing Perisic to provide natural balance on left side - would love a new left wing back in January, but having secured the other lad for next summer not sure if we would?

I think he would be helped by us securing and playing a proper RWB. At the moment, the opposition can almost double up on him as they no there is little threat coming from our right side. Once that gets sorted I'd hope to see Sess kick on.

This is spot on.

But I'd add one more big problem...

He spent all summer conditioning and strengthening his hamstrings. His training regime was noticeably focused with the intent of avoiding hamstring injuries......and then....he gets a hamstring injury.

It may be somewhat out of his hands but unless he gets past it the injuries will start impacting him psychologically if they haven't already

Reggie only went on loan I believe

Why do you think that?
The fact he wanted him gone in the summer and he isn't a very good left back let alone a wing back.

Spurs fans do this with every player that disappears from the first team for a while. They all of a sudden become the answer again.

There is a name for this illness on SC, it's called the "Lamela Syndrome"

Your argument falls down because Lamela always was, is and will be the answer.
