Another problem with negotiating right up to the deadline is that eventually (even if you offer the full amount) it leaves the selling club no time to spend the money on a replacement.
If you pay the release clause that's their concern not yours and if they haven't sorted a replacement that's their fault they shouldn't have haggled so long.

Do you not think we’ve delayed triggering the release clause in order for Sporting to bring in their replacement? It’s very plausible we’ve worked to assist Sporting here.

That’s not true. Clubs negotiate (and pull the plug on) transfers all the time.

From sportings perspective, they’d just pull the plug on the deal for the Dutch wingback they’ve lined up because Porro didn’t leave in the end.
If they didn’t start work on a replacement whilst in negotiations to sell a player that frankly that’s their own mistake.

However, I get why you bring this up as it’s been used by the club as an excuse for past failings in the transfer window (when in reality the club didn’t have a plan or just lowballed

A lot of the time the selling club will want to line up a replacement (if they want one) before they commit to the sale.

According to transfermarket his average position is RM. Do we have anyone on here who watches him regularly? How good is he at RB? With Conte unlikely to stay just trying to understand why we are still signing a player who appears perfect for RWB but odds are the next manager we appoint won't play with wingbacks

Genuine Q, it's not just me that has this concern or am I way off here?! If no one else thinks it then grand I'm obviously wrong but I'm just not seeing the logic here. Danjuma I completely get as he's a cheap loan and if Porro was a top RB I could see it as chances are next season he'll be playing for a manager who plays 4 at the back.

Cos a good manager works with what he has.

Porro has played right back in his career though. I really don’t see how him being such a good wing back will stop him being a good attacking rb under a different manager. From when I’ve seen him play he has more defensive awareness than someone like Trippier for example.

Cancelo, Hakimi, Arnold all had success in back 4 formations (2 of them are crap this season though). Mitoma is one of the best players in the league this season and he goes forward even more than Porro. Players with technical ability work in almost any system.

I’ve seen a lot of people say we might not play wingbacks with next manager. I would say our entire squad is setup for aggressive FBs/WBs even if playing 4 at the back. We have no creative mids that could drift out to the wing (Kulu at a push) and provide width and almost all of our wide forwards prefer to drift into the middle. Without marauding FBs/WBs I imagine we would need to do a total rebuild or end up playing incredibly narrow.

Therefore one hopes that the next manager will also play with the width being providing from deep?

Also no manager is 100% for the following season. We need to back the person who is in the seat unless he has explicitly told the club that he will not renew.

I generally curl up in a ball, tuck my knees to my chest. Then begin a rocking motion.

That's how I roll.

Seriously though. Perhaps conte will stay, a good 2nd half to the season, and things can change. Also, getting CL is worth a lot more than porros fee.
