What's your alternative suggestion for a quality, super confident 3rd choice goalkeeper?
This is it see. People are happy to bash without giving the alternatives. We needed our 3rd keeper to be home grown. Our youth keepers aren’t ready yet so who do we bring in. Ramsdale is going for £20m+. Foster is better than Hart but is 37 and would require a transfer fee which we can ill-afford to commit to when funds are tight. A loan would be no use to us. So be default Joe Hart is by far the most sensible option. And whilst he’s very obviously not the player he was at City, people acting like he’s going to throw the ball in the net if/when he gets on are over-exaggerating massively. He’s much better than Green, Carson, Lonegran etc, who’ve signed for other top 6 clubs recently and been perfectly fine members of their squads.

Why should I have one. I'm not a football manager or scout that sees clubs' 3rd choice keepers play. Doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on one who has been incredibly visible and whose confidence is/was absolutely shot to pieces

That's because no one sees 3rd choice keepers play....they don't?

Not to mention you could sign the most confident keeper in the world...that confidence will be shot to pieces when he's been 3rd choice and not played a game for 9 months.

Do feel like if you’re arguing that someone isn’t good enough then you should be able to name at least one player that meets the standard you would like. Just my opinion anyway.

U-23, U-21, behind close doors friendlies, loan spells at lower league clubs.

I'm sure that 3rd choice keepers do get watched

Yes, but younger players which fit
those categories need to play football now. It's why every other big team in the league has adopted exactly the same policy of an older, nothing keeper.

Exactly this, Chelsea have Rob Green and Man City have Scott Carson, Joe Hart was miles in front of those 2 anyway in terms of ability.
He will be purchased for a few reasons, competition, experience, mentality, FREE (!) homegrown. He ticks so many boxes.
And those saying why don’t we promote a youth keeper? Well maybe they’re just not good enough yet. If this is Mourinho’s choice then that’s good enough for me.

I swear we’re the only club with fans that over analyse and criticise a 3rd choice goalkeeper signing

Some posters on here could do Masterclasses in self righteousness. Still, let's all big it up for the keeper who wasn't good enough for West Ham or Burnley, eh?
Not sure it’s people being self righteous so much as putting the signing in it’s proper context. If the club announced that Lloris was being sold and Joe Hart had been signed - yep, I could understand the outrage but he’s not the new number one, he’s a player that Jose has decided could be an asset to the squad and he’s a player who has been there and done it in terms of experience and winning trophies. I think that people are just questioning the negativity, not getting on a high horse. If anyone is getting on a high horse then you have a point.

I’m just staggered that so many people on here know so much more about goalkeepers, goalkeeping and sports psychology than the professional coaches, managers, advisors and management team running THFC.

One can only imagine the incredible contribution they are making in their day jobs and lament their loss to the professional game.

They do play and they do get watched all the time. What will also be in the ranks is a 4th, 5th and 6th choice keeper too - a whole haggle of keepers ranging from scholars, u18’s, u23’s and fully fledged professionals.

I know one of them personally, who was a pro at spurs and trained with Loris (my sons keeper coach).

never got anywhere near first team squad though, but played lots in lower down games and loans etc.

Surely that's the point? If our scouts/manager think he is good enough and the right sort of player having seen all the rest that means he is the right signing? There clearly aren't any obvious alternatives.

Hugo is supposed to be a leader and I agree that he is, regardless of how vocal he is or isn’t on the pitch. The thing that can change games is having someone who will say it how it is in the changing room at half time. For me Vorm and Gazza will not call players out and try to be mates with everyone first. Hart won’t be afraid to russle a few feathers.

Personally I see Hart being a leader in the dressing room and being a model professional on and off the pitch. He offers more than just being a HG option and I would assume he’ll be starting his coaching badges in no time and with our record or giving young coaches a chance, we’re a great fit for him.
