You do know why I brought Kane up, you made a point that our very good defensive record that season was somehow despite a centre back who played 31 times for us in the league, and implied that he only looks good if the team plays well, as if there is such thing as a footballer who looks just as good at all teams regardless of the players around him. In modern football there is not such thing as a top 3 side with an excellent defence and attack that carried any players, if the defensive record is good it’s because all the players defending are good at it, if the attack is good it’s because all the players responsible for attacking at good at it. A better functioning team relies on better functioning players in every position. One weakness and it falls apart.

Firstly, I didn’t say it was in spite of him I just think that goals conceded during a particular season doesn’t prove anything one way or the other about an individual player which brings me to the point you've just made which is completely untrue. 99% of teams carry a few players in relation to the level they are at where if you put them in another side they would be exposed.

To be honest, all the flaws you are currently seeing we saw with a young Ledley King, the same as we saw the potential with his positional awareness and recovery pace.

I'm not saying he will be as good as Ledley, but the ingredients are there.
Agree.

What was really the making of Ledley imo was when he got converted to a DM. he got into the England squad in that position, but what it really did was improve his anticipation and positioning imo.

Just another player clueless people won’t rate until he’s moved to a bigger club or been established here 5 years. I remember people slating Vertonghen at the start too. Sanchez is still 2 years younger than Vertonghen was when we signed him.

Virgins just want to cast aspersions on him now so they can say “I told you so” if it doesn’t work out. Sad.

The good thing about being a virgin is I have more time to watch football and understand it better than the guys getting it left right and centre. You’ll get there eventually ?

Might seem harsh to dig him out on a night where we were absolutely awful but he was our worst defender tonight.

Got so tight to Rashford so many times only to be turned and allowing Rashford to run.

His passing was horrendous too. He does not want the ball at his feet. He lashed the ball at team mates a few times with nobody near him and put them under so much pressure.

Not harsh at all. He and Sissoko absolutely murdered our play at the back with so many poor passes.

I just don't understand what he was thinking for the first goal. He had two chance to clear and he fluffed it both times. other than that I thought he was pretty good, some very strong defensive headers.

Can’t believe we payed that amount of money for him. 3 seasons now? He’s not going to be a star for us like we all thought.

Sissoko gave a soft pen away when will we learn. Still thought Sanchez was our best defender not as good on the ball...Alderweireld wasn't much better hitting aimless long balls. Overall it was a poor performance I don't know where we go from here once the Mourinho bounce wears off I seriously worry.

Levy has to get that cheque book out

All he does is short passes to Toby. Sideways. Never passes to anyone else, just short passes to Toby again and again and again. Can't stand it.

Why is he playing on the right? We know he cant pass so why negate Alderweirelds excellent passing. Aldweweired should he right centre back

Unfortunately this is the problem with Sanchez. For all his decent form recently, he is capable of an inexcusable moment where he has a brain fart and lands himself and the team in it. Top quality defenders don't do that and why he falls short. Also teams are happy to drop back and happy for him to have the ball because he can't play a telling ball and pretty much force him to the play the ball you want him to play so can almost read the situation before it happens

He's excellent for 90% of every game, defensively at least, but almost every game has a massive error that leads to a goal or a really good chance for the opposition. With the ball at his feet, he's poor. That one give away when we had a chance to break away was so bad.

I wondered if Mourinho wants Alderweireld in the middle of back 3 when we go to 3241 with the ball. Conte was the one who has popularised that shape and always had his two good long range passers - Bonucci and Luiz - in the middle. He could also want Sanchez's pace to plug the gapes Aurier would leave. If this was the case he'd have to have Alderweireld on the left.

We might learn more if we play Foyth right back and an attacking left back, or if Vertonghen plays alongside him.

Irrespective of the Sanchez mistake the keeper should of had his near post covered and was at fault for the goal. We can bang on about defenders until the cows come home, but our midfield was absolutely shocking today and is the first area that needs to be addressed. Man Utd's midfielders got over run by Sheffield Utd and Aston villa in their last 2 games. Today we made them look like World beaters.

He just needs to calm down and not so tense. Everytime the camera pans to him, he will show you the exasperated look. And he is taking far too many touches in stopping and trapping the balls, sometimes pushing the ball too far off him before making a pass, inviting pressure from opponents to start tackling him.

He really needs to calm down. Heightened anxiety. Long gone was the poise he had just arriving from Ajax.

People need to calm down. Sanchez made a few poor passes but was still our best defender by a country mile. Alderweireld made more useless diagonal passes against United and didn't bring the ball out once...Alderweireld and Vertonghen are finished imo

I feel for Pochettinho really because Levy still has to get the cheque book out.. Our midfield is now shocking I've been defending certain players for a while but when you're being dominated by McTom and Fred we need to look squarely in the mirror.
