Player watch: Christian Eriksen

Why is it out of line?

I have absolutely no issue with him running down his contract, that is his right, but I do have issue with his piss poor performances. Even Modric in his last season (having tried to force his way out over summer to Chelsea) put in his best season for us.

He’s supposed to be one of the best play makers around and should be inspiring the players around him whilst he still plays for us.

Instead he has downed tools.

And yes I know so have a lot of others but he is supposed to be one of our best players.

But this is an Eriksen thread so I’ll pen my thoughts about him in here and comment on others in other threads. ;-)

So you expect Eriksen to play really well or put in good performances, when NONE on the team plays well? Well that's a great logic there mate.

I'd like to see our best player in Harry Kane do that. Take the team by the guts and guide our way to victory, as he is a WORLD CLASS striker and earn 3 times the other players in the squad. Yet I don't see his thread bumped after every match or for that matter Alli's, Lloris, Dier, Rose & I could really go on.
This hate towards Eriksen has been going on here on SC ever since it was clear he was never gonna sign a new contract, and if you havn't you should look at some match threads. It's so toxic towards him. It was exactly the same with Walker. Disgusting.

Nevermind actually. I was going to write another essay in this thread but I really won't bother.
Like @McFlash said I had my battles. But he also know it's because Eriksen's attitude doesn't go well for you brits.

Very generalisation of ‘us brits there’, you’re the blindly defending Eriksen mainly because he’s a fellow Dane.

And you’ve contradicted yourself a bit with the Walker comparison as he himself is English, showing it had nothing to do with nationality fans giving stick to a wantaeay player who is displaying bad attitude and not playing to their full (and nationality should not be bought into it, it certainly wasn’t in my thinking as I think of him purely as a player, not a nation).

And Lloris gets PLENTY of stick so that’s utter bollocks, as does Rose and Dele is often criticised (although he hasn’t been playing as much lately, hence it’s quietened down on him). I’m sure if he gets back into team and doesn’t hit heights expected they’ll be plenty of criticism of him. ;-)

But tarring ‘is brits’ is just lazy and quite frankly offensive tbh.

Really? THEM?!?!? In order to defend Eriksen, you choose to bring THEM into it? Is this your first time on SC and the person here before was an alter ego or something? If anyone gets ripped more than Eriksen on SC, it is them.

Like I said I could name anyone on the team currently. But it's no coincidence this thread soon has 600 pages. I think maybe all the others combined have the same amount.

I was defending him way more before to be fair. But now he has been shit for a while, and believe it or not I want him gone as well. But that doesn't mean he has to take all the shit from some fans in here. Or any Spurs-player for that matter. And no, I was a supporter long before Eriksen arrived, has been for 30 years.

They do get criticised but in no way the same amount as Eriksen.

You’re just jealous that he has a hat with horns and an axe though.

Plus he was able to pay for that natty hair transplant, whilst I just have to settle for shaving my head.

Although tbh he started playing better once he had that hair transplant, so maybe its wearing off an he needs another, which will result in him playing well again?

Can only hope Levy learns to let people go, who wants to, instead of getting greedy and putting outrageous price tags (£130m!) on them. That doesn't encourage anyone to make an offer...

Yeah I wish we’d just get shot sometimes rather than being so greedy and holding onto players far longer than we should (like Dembele, god bless his soul).

Can't win though can he?

If he sold him for £50m, our band of levyphobic warriors with email addresses as usernames would be hanging dear leader out to dry.

The problem with saying "get rid at any cost" is that we only feel that way after seeing him play this season - he was fine in preseason and people still had a hardon for him at the end of the last.

Surely. But maybe a realistic £65m pre-season would have been sending a better signal to other clubs. At his best, we could maybe get £85, but never what Levy asked.

I know there's a difference. My question was that if it came out that this was the case would it change your perception?
Yeah, sorry, my reply wasn't aimed at you as such, more the statement made by the podcast - they should choose their words more carefully.

If it did come out that he is depressed, then yes, it would probably change my perception but I'd still feel that he shouldn't be playing until he gets his head straight.
If it's so bad that he's not getting release from doing the thing he loves, then he needs a break from it or else he'll just get worse.

It's best not to retrospectively visit such thinking. I seem to remember a majority saying that "If Chelsea got £100m+ for Hazard, we should get x for Eriksen", so I don't think it would have gone down well. People have changed their tune as eriksen has slowly gone off the boil.

As a second point, we don't actually know what we valued him at, nor whether anyone enquired. As far as I am aware, he wanted to play for a club that has no interest in him whatsoever.

Heard a Podcast that suggested that his failure to get the move to Real or Barca may have left him feeling depressed - hence the not so good form for club and now country.

If that were the case, would it change anyone's perception of the situation?
If that is correct then it is why he isn’t strong enough mentally for RM or Barca. The pressure he would be under at either of those clubs is of a whole different order to what he gets at Spurs. I really believe he will very quickly regret despite the money a move to either RM or Barca.

Well, to be fair, he did not play convincingly last season either (much of the team didn't). Hazard being in a completely different league and showing much more fight in general.

The £130 was a quote from Levy (according to news outlets):
