Talking about one of the best players in the league here, it would be utterley stupid to leave him on the bench.

If he stays and doesn't sign a new contract Poch needs to do his job and get his head right, get him refocused and integrate him into the team, just because we have shiny new toys it doesn't mean we should just discard the old ones especially when they are meaningful assets.

It's for his benefit anyway if he stays for now - if he plays well it puts him in the shop window when he leaves on a free next year.
??‍♂️ The key bit of that sentence is ‘on merit’, I even put it in bold so it could not be misinterpreted. If nobody performs better than Eriksen he obviously stays in the first XI.

Has anyone seen a tweet or social media From Eriksen? Would think it is critical for him to mend fences with the fans immediately regardless of his long term aspirations. Surprised that his agent/advisers didn't have a ready made tweet yet.

What does he have to mend? He hasn't sat out practice, he hasn't said anything really inflammatory, he hasn't missed a match, and most of the information about him has come from ITKs. Realistically if he's going to stay he will sign and contract and all is forgotten.

Surely a new contract with a reasonable buy out clause if one of the big Spanish clubs come in for him would suit all parties? Hopefully an option anyway.
That option just takes away his massive signing on bonus and wage imo. I think if he stays we play him but if there’s any consideration to who gets the nod (I.e Lo Celso or Eriksen same role both on form) it goes to the guy committed. At the end of the day he’s an asset the club are paying for so utilise his skills whilst we have them

Don't think he needs to. Just because a few keyboard warriors are acting like he has shagged their wives, imagine the vast majority of the fans that actually go to games, will be very pleased he his still here., certainly all my circle are.

Why? Would you really fall for that?

Sandro - fair enough on the contract.
DAgraham - regarding the "fall for that", his original quote created a gap between him and the fans. is he aware and does he care? i would think it is PR 101.
MK Yid - enjoyed your description. I'm glad he's still here but having some post where he said "Spurs showed ambition", or "i think my challenge is to be a part of a Spurs trophy...." and if done with some kind of emotion might tell us where his brain is. I think a fired up Eriksen could be one of the best outcomes from this transfer window. and yes, that is optimistic.

I don`t blame anybody for wanting new opportunities and a new job. But, I blame a football player who strikes and don`t stick to his commitments and obligations. As long as a player have a contract and earn 100 000 + pounds pr week, they have to deliver. I think Eriksen is a realistic guy. If there`s no real good options for him in this transfer window, I`m sure he will re-sign a new contract. In the meantime while he sort out his mind, he has to play for us and perform at his best as long as he`s a Spurs player and we pay him big big money every week.

In fact home and away all season will be singing his song longer and louder, in the hope that he feels the love, and may be persuaded to stay with us.

Eriksen has acted very professionally in all this, not went on strike, no bad mouthing the club.
His nonchalant demeanour leads people to think he don’t care.
I’ll support him until he is gone

That would be pretty much unprecedented. You'll only get quotes like that from him IF he signs a new deal.

Yeah it may be PR 101, but I suppose it depends on what you think of PR. I think it’s mostly bullshit.

It will be what he does on the pitch if he’s still here and selected that’s important.

And even then, I doubt the players sit around for hours writing a speech that sets the right tone anyway. Most of them are well versed in glib media trained responses.

I am pretty shocked by some of the negative comments on here about our most important player of recent years. Eriksen was run to the ground last season. So he pulls out of tackles which could injure him - bloody fantastic I say! If he didn't we would'nt be finishing top 4 or reaching a CL final - Kane, take note! It doesn't mean he doesn't work his arse off for the team or get very much stuck in.

Some people need to take a better look at what Eriksen does for this team. We all know that he is the number one assist maker in the PL over the last 5 years, even if he was only third last season with Hazard taking top spot. Hazard scores more goals, but Eriksen scores plenty and they tend to be bloody important ones too. But the bigger picture is that Hazard would struggle to play for Pochettino because he is only putting in a fraction of the effort Eriksen does, time and time again.

He may have the good sense to pull out of tackles which might seriously injure him, but it doesn't stop him making countless important tackles and interceptions because he reads the game so well and frankly runs his arse off. I exaggerate of course, you can count them - he made 41 successful tackles last season in the league, compared to Hazard's 14 (or Ozil's 20). He is always in the top percentile for distance covered and one of our most ardent pressers a la Poch. His total contribution to the team puts Hazard and Ozil to shame.

Since he joined us, if there was one player whose absence spelt trouble it was Christian. But sure let's want him out because he had the sheer audacity to suggest that after six seasons of brilliant service to the club he wants to try a new challenge and lifestyle abroad (besides new shiny players who haven't proved themselves in the PL are of course much better).

He has been the consummate professional throughout and he has never thrown his toys around or disrespected the club in any way, but let's get rid of the scoundrel now in case he jeopardises a new toy for us.

If a player chooses to refuse to sign a new contract and play a number of years earning a pittance compared to what he deserves, all to ensure that he keeps control of when he moves on, how can this be criticised? For me, if he signed better terms one year and then kicks up a fuss when we won't let him leave in the next window, that can and should be criticised. See Zaha last season. Eriksen, though, has been completely honest and respectful throughout.

If you want to compare european finals and how Hazard stepped up and Eriksen looked flat, perhaps you want to consider the work rate the two players showed over the season to get their teams there. Hazard is mercurial, I agree, but also a lazy bastard (does anyone think Christian would turn up at Madrid a stone overweight?). Eriksen had been forced to carry this team over a long gruelling season where he couldn't be rested but still out-ran and out-worked the vast majority of his team mates. He had run out of gas by the end, and it hurt him more than any of us.

Eriksen couldn't get a rest all season, by contrast Hazard regularly took them even during matches.

And of course Eriksen is bloody upset right now because he really deserves his dream move, and anyone who understands football and actually looks at his stats compared to Hazard and Ozil should appreciate that. I feel for him, I really do. But should he stay and actually finally be given some competition for his place (and more importantly a rest from time to time) everything this player has ever done, week in, week out, for years, suggests he will keep giving his all for this team. Whether he signs a new deal or not.

I will be delighted for every additional season we get from a player that is already deserving of legendary status, and frankly deserves a lot more respect and appreciation.

Well written!

I am also surprised how people are upset at Eriksen for potentially letting his contract run down. If we have to talk about money then let's discuss why we didn't give him his fair salary two three seasons ago. He should earn 150-200k a week, but instead the club kept it at 75-80. Son is 140k and Harry 200k. What goes around comes around!

And, no, Eriksen is not a player, who goes out and singlehandedly wins a game. He needs dangerous people up front, who can make runs and occupy defenders. With Kane out much of last season and out of form in the final (because he doesn't know when not to tackle) and Son also missing initially, Eriksen didn't get the space and the opportunities he needed.

He might lack some self confidence, but hopefully that will be back and this year he will be a better amplifier for the team with an improved midfield and Kane back.

I'm kind of hoping that he'll have a change of heart now and sign a new deal.

Get behind him and it might happen.

He literally turned down Man U to stay here and some of you are hating on him.
He is seriously underated by people on here. Hope he signs a new deal and gets back to being one of our main men.
