After the city performance I'm confident we can get 4 wins and a draw out of 5 before we face chavs , this is the type of run we need now:

Newcastle home - win
Villa away - draw
Stoke home - win
Hull away - win
Everton - home - win

Hull could be the sticky one I can see a draw there. They've improved a lot.

If we want to compete for a CL spot this season we need to get on a run here.

I expect 11-15 points, anything less is not good enough. And yeah why not...10-15 goals

Agreed, I view Hull away as the toughest of those fixtures barring Everton having a bit of a renaissance after this latest win.

Entirely agreed. 11 points from this stretch is the minimum for me even while in obvious reconstruction mode. As Arse, Man U, and Liverpool are also still struggling to mesh and Saints are unlikely to maintain at least this form, we're actually still in with a shot at fourth. More importantly though, we need to set ourselves up to be clearly on the path of improvement, both for the sake of our own players' mentality and also elsewhere, as I think we'll be in for a busier January window than is usual for us.

We should be winning the next three games, regardless of how well Villa have started the season. After the signs we've shown in the last 3 games, I'd be disappointed if we got anything less than 10 points from 15.

Goals win games, and we are coming up short again. Don't share the OPs optimism.

Draw with villa? are you on crack? They are garbage. Don't let their little run fool you.

Plus I'm going to that game so we better win!

Hard to believe we are only 2 points off 4th place with the inconsistent results we have had.

We created 19 chances away to Man City.

Correct but Man City wre not sitting back, and created the same number or a coouple more against us.

Against teams who sit back against us (most teams except the top 4 or 5), its been a different story

Our problem this season has been both creating enough chances - and converting them into goals.

Villa are absolute rubbish at home and will be missing their best player (Delph), its away from home they are dangerous. Hull away will be tricky as will Everton at home who seem to be getting key players out of the injury room and onto the pitch.

Really? Seems to me that scoring goals has been a real problem for a long time now.

It has been since two years ago really. The only thing that kept us going was really Bale in 2012-13. He was the only player we had that pried defenses open and allowed us to establish any rhythm.

But with Mason and his ability now centrally, I think we'll see massive change soon. The biggest problem hasn't been inability in front of goal, it's been establishing clear chances such that the chances of us failing on capitalizing are minimal. Too many of our chances the past two years have been weak chances with heavily covered forwards, and not enough getting on the end of throughballs in space that causes defenders to backpedal into disarray. With quick transitional passing from deep, such as that which Mason provides, that will change.

True, but this is based off a system playing guys in the No 8 slot who do not implement transitional passing from deep, and since we have finally implemented such a player for the role, only against Arsenal, City, and a strong Saints squad. As of yet, there's no telling how such a massive change will do in the league against outright inferior competition. Would you have predicted we'd get it done against this current Saints squad given their run of forum?

No that's very true. However we have been very inconsistent with results so far this saeason (as have many teams hence all the bunching of the teams between 4th and about 17th).

The next 5 games do offer us a great chance to put points on the board, but I am still concerned with our abilities at AM and striker to convert our play into goals and thereby victories. I agree Mason's forward passing/attacking from central midfield could become as effective as Carrick's quick forward passing was in helping our forwards create more chances - just hope we cvan convert more into goals !

Need to win all the home games. I think people get a little carried away with us on the road. Picking up points away from home against any team that is destined to finish inside the top 14 is a good result.
