Avb was a strange man who fell out with players
Yeah - I think he lost faith when Bale was sold. But I still recall the Liverpool fiasco, and thinking at the time he would not survive - because the players had completely given up on him.

I don't think I knew Sherwood was selling him out at the same time...

A mate worked at the team hotel met him a lot and said

“His a strange man”

I remember when I worked at McLaren and he bought the squad over. I should’ve been buzzing at getting the chance to see them all close up, but I was furious as we’d lost 4-0 to West Ham the previous day and there they all were having a lovely day looking at supercars.

I think he was unfortunate, as I don’t imagine he was behind most of the Bale money signings. Baldini was by far the bigger flop. We know AVB pushed very hard for Willian, Moutinho & Hulk. Imagine those instead of Lamela, Paulinho & Soldado

Would love to have seen how he’d have done with those signings to be fair.

He played some of the worst football I can remember at Spurs, Even the first season the football was very poor but Bale was a force of nature. I think people like to defend AVB because he was this young, vaguely trendy guy that a lot of of men here like to project things onto. Whereas no one really wants to be Harry Redknapp. But the football was a massive downgrade.

Could never understand the adulation some fans had for AVB, not based on the football we saw. I guess he was a sort of proxy for how they saw themselves: the smart guy who wasn’t very good at sports, but whose superior intellect made him better suited to be a manager than all those dumb jocks who’d actually played the game.
If he was ugly, he wouldn't have the support

He looked the part,
He spoke well,
He said philosophy,
He was slightly mysterious

Its a shame, he was shit

I remember me using this gif to describe AVB's football

It was pass to left wing, left wing passes to CM to rb to right wing, Right wing to rb to Bale, Shoot, goal

Boring AF. I hated playing pool or city, as I felt it was going to be 5-0 every time.

Exactly this. For a certain sort of football fan, like the guys who play a lot of football manager or study tactical videos on twitter, AVB was the literal embodiment of living the dream.

I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way: it’s understandable why people might be drawn to that. But if he was an overweight northern guy in his 50s no one would have given him the benefit of the doubt.

Some fans get so caught up in the idea of a manager that they stop seeing the football itself: we had it recently with Conte. The kind of football you might associate with someone like Roy Hodgson or Sam Allardyce but because the perception of the person is different they are judged by different standards.

The idea of AVB was fabulous - young, intelligent, up-and-coming, loved all the talk of philosophies, was going to retire and do the Paris-Dakar after winning everything with us .
The reality of AVB, not so much.

I remember a lot of boring matches with a lot of sideways passing then it would get to 80 minutes and Bale would score. Then we sold Bale and it was the same but without him scoring.
