Also need to stop remembering history with rose tinted glasses, dembele for a long period was not great many wanted him gone, erikssen started slow also and was always ridiculed for his tackling, Kane could easily have gone before he even got his chance, Rose was considered second rate, Walker all speed and no brain. Poch brought a togetherness, a work ethic and improved many of our players, brought them to their own peak, turned them from nearly players into top top players. Many of our current squad could very well hit those heights with the right coaching. So let's not compare that team at their peak with our current team at their worst (excluding Kane) because it's nor a true comparison, time will tell

Great post.

Also think it's worth mentioning that, while our squad almost certainly lacks the unearthed talent of that early Poch squad, we also had shit-all depth back then and that remained a problem deep into the Poch years.

Our squad right now is bloated and all over the place, but I think in terms of variety and depth there's still something for a resourceful manager to work with if they have an open mind give everyone a clean slate.

Conte basically bombed out half of of the more technical players in the squad - will be interesting to see if Ange is able to bring any of them back from the dead and they're not as useless as we perhaps thought.

But by God Ange will definitely need some quality CBs and a keeper, though.

Sorry but no, I don’t think so at all. Prime Dembele, Eriksen, a young hungry Kane, great full backs. We really need to start waking up to how poor this current lot are.
Dembele wasn’t in his prime when Poch took over, he was a shadow of himself. Poch took over a poor team and got rid of the poisonous players and gave the rest belief.

That's correct, but that didn't happen until around November time.

Rather than compare this squad to the one Poch took over

think there is no real debate to say the overall standard of the league is much higher now than back then

Watching some of these videos on Ange's tactics and starting to get worried we don't have the players to play this system.

Bentacur could play the single-pivot but could Bissouma or Sarr? PEH and Skipp can't.

That last video lost me when he posted our team. He didn't mention Diet, Udogie or Kulu.

I think Bissouma or Skipp (more training needed)could be the six and Bentancour could absolutely be the guy breaking into the box as an 8. Just need a playmaker and we're constantly being linked with Madison but there are plenty out there.

My biggest worry is the fullbacks to be honest.

I’m actually really looking forward to his interviews in a few months where he described the situation on walking in, what kind of morale and motivation he found in the locker room and what his analysis of it told him he needed to do first.

I know we can see it, but he’s just the sort of bloke I’d like to hear talk about it and see his analysis of the situation.

Poch inherited Eriksen, Dembele, Walker, Rose, Kane, Lloris and Vertongen.... Massively superior to what Ange is inheriting
No it isn't because we don't know how good these players can be. This is the problem when young players get written off. We didn't know those players would do as well as they did at that time. You can only judge them with hindsight now but at this time we can't tell with this group yet. There are plenty of early to mid 20s players who we are yet to find out their true potential just like when Poch took over. Anyone who thinks they knew how good the likes of Kane, Walker, Rose, Eriksen and Dembele would be in 2014 is lying. We looked very poor the previous season and were in serious need of change. Poch completely transformed the club and the work rate of every player. He sold off anyone who didn't work hard or fit his philopsophy. We can't know what will develop under Ange, only time will tell. I just wouldn't write this squad off just because of how poor we've looked this season. We had a great run a year ago with the same set of players and now have several more. They need work but if Ange is the right man like Poch was then this group could look very different in a year.

He mentioned Dier, said he doesn't fit into that back two, Udogie I'm guessing he just forgot or didn't know much about him and he mentioned Kulu hadn't been made permanent, so no inclusion but stated he was a better fit on the right.

True but Dembele didnt even start in his first season. People wanted Rose gone and a significant minority thought walker was total shit. Even Vertonghen had a poor season, to the extent that sherwood would later claim he couldn't even defend. Kane was a kid that most did not think he would become what he did. Only Eriksen and Lloris were highly regarded by most here.

In 10 years time when we have a crisis we could easily be saying that Ange inherited Deki, Son, Cuti, Bentecur, but also the likes of porro, bissouma, udogie, spence, Gil. Basically any player.

Because what you are doing is rating the team Poch inherited by what they became not what they were perceived as back then. You can play this game for ever. It is worth noting that Poch needed time and did slowly build a team (largely through development rather than signings but nonetheless) that patience also needs to be given to Ange.
Really good perspective here.

Great video. He's gonna take no shit from any players who's hiding now. Loving that.

When he starts giving the players shit they will just go running to Levy. It’s the default setting.

I think Biss and PEH would be the natural DM, Bentancour the 8 with Skipp and Sarr, even Lo Celso in there, the creative midfielder we lack, Maddison is obviously a possibility.

The fullbacks are an issue though as next season we will have 2 very good wing backs in Porro and Udogie, don't think either are good enough defensively to play full back. But you never know, reminds me off Klopps early days with Robertson and Trent, the defensive issues were mostly overshadowed by the brilliant attacking and assists. We would need another top top class centre back to even have a chance of doing that though.
