I know that newcomer of the year isn't really a regular part of the Premier League, but there have been quite a few good (some even great, some possibly world class) new players breaking through in the Premier League this season.

For example:

Jan Vertonghen
Hugo Lloris
Moussa Sissoko
Shinji Kagawa
Luke Shaw
Christian Benteke
Eden Hazard
Oscar
Kevin Mirallas
Edit: Michu. How did I forget Michu?
....
The list goes on.

Who would you crown 'Newcomer of the Year' if it was up to you?

I'd probably give it to Verts. He's been outstanding. Solid defender, assists, goals and leadership. A truly classy CB at the age of 25. Lloris has been great too but he was already a big name on the international scene, being France's captain and no 1.

Benteke has probably been this years most surprising player. Never thought that an unknown player from Belgium would score 15 for a very, very bad Villa side. So credit to him.

Hazard started very well too, think he was involved in 7 of Chelsea first 9 goals or something like that, but he's sort of faded as the season went on.

The word "Rookie" to me means someone young, who's had a great break out year in their first year playing pro-football.

So, I guess - Luke Shaw. Maybe Ben Davies.

In terms of best first year in England I think it's hard to look past Michu, but I think Vertonghen has to be up there considering the number of defensive partners and even defensive positions that he's had to deal with. He's had an excellent season and really hope he progresses next year...hopefully with Kaboul alongside him.

hmm well Rookie of the year in the states is for athletes whose first year it is in the major league of the sport, be it the NBA or MLB so it doesnt quite work here for the majority of players on your list

but I understand what you mean, spouse that little shit Hazzard has had a big impact. But Benteke since he is the closest to being a 'Rookie' since the Belgium league isnt very major

Could a mod change the title to Newcomer instead of Rookie?

Without attempting to look past my obvious Spurs bias, I can't think of any player who has done more for their club than Lloris. Bringing him into the team transformed us from a team who were just waiting to get ripped apart by any team who could chip a ball over the high line to a team who look like they have a defensive plan.

If we're talking rookie as in youngster - Luke Shaw.

If it's newcomer to the league - Michu.

It's got to be Michu. He's been great in the league, but helping Swansea get to the final and win a trophy is an amazing achievement.

Laudrup deseves a mention as well.

For me, and hopefully without Spurs bias, it has to be a toss up between Lloris, Verts, and Benteke. Perhaps Benteke nicks it as he came from a significantly weaker league.

And agree with nailsy above, Laudrup has been fantastic. took over from Rogers and has shown him up to be honest, has the potential to end up managing a top team for years.

Benteke, end of story for me. He has been outstanding in a team that had been pretty woeful this season, single handedly kept them up!!!

Benteke for me. Goals in a struggling team. Would love to sign him. Going to get better and better.
