I love Modric. Love him. Great player.

However if he was sold, and I may be on my own with this one, I don't think it would be a disaster as we have Van Der Vaart and Kranjcar who could both play in their favoured position behind the striker. Equally they could both play with Modric in a midfield 3.

Would I accept selling Modric if it meant we signed Rossi, Falcao and Vucinic for example? Yes probably.

I agree, Modric to me is one of the most fantastic players I've ever seen in a Spurs shirt, he has an abundance of talent and could play in the best teams in the world. As much as I wish his ambition was hand in hand with our club, I have a feeling that he will be off - and I wouldnt mind if he was replaced with goal scoring talent. If he went then Kranjcar could play in his role, and although he wouldnt have the same playmaking talent, he would score more goals... Hudd could sit in the middle as the playmaker.

If we got 45 million for him like the papers are touting today, we could easily pick up Llorente and Rossi

I agree that it would not be a disaster if Modric went for £40m plus.

We made the CL when he was out foe more than half of the season. Since then we've also had Bale come through and added VDV.

A lineup a la:

Friedel

Corluka Gallas King Bale

Palacios Sandro

Lennon van der Vaart Kranjcar

Striker

Modric is a magical little player, but we have quality over the park. If we sold him and added a couple of meaty strikers, I wouldn't cry.

Could even sell Bale/Lennon while we're at it... I'd be completely happy with this:

------ Gomes
BAE Gallas Daws Charlie

---- Hudd Sandro

----Krancj VdV Rossi

----- Llorente

Get in Marin, Eriksen, Kjaer and we've got competition for spaces, young talent and money to spare.

(Spent too much of the weekend playing FM)

Looking at some of the above posts I'm glad to know the majority do not fear the doom and gloom.

My posts are obv just theoretical, if we sell Modric and Bale and do not replace with quality, then I'll be boycotting Spurs for the season! (or until the January window atleast)

There shouldn't be any doom and gloom. I steered clear of SC whilst away at the u21s cause I knew when the Modric news broke it would be awful on here.

As I said I love Modric and if he was here for the next 10 years I'd be delighted, but it's not realistic.

There are some wonderful young players out there who could replace him.

I'd like to see us go for Downing and a nice all-round central midfielder to partner Sandro.

5'10 at the shortest (prerably 6 foot plus) and someone who has a good engine and attacking instinct but also can track back.

Jenas?

For me, it is not an issue of whether we could replace him, hard though that would be.

There are two real issues IMHO:

1) Would the player we replaced him with hit the ground running, or would we have to wait a couple of years for him to develop, meaning that when we are so close now we are, in effect, put back a few years.

2) It sends out the wrong message...END OF DEBATE!

Yeah, I'd like to think we can attract an Eriksen.

If we haven't learnt by now after Berbatov we never will.

Do you mean the Berbatov who's sale helped fund quality players that got us into the CL?

No I meant keeping a player who didn't want to play for us leaving us totally limp going into a new season.

The guy doesn't want to play for us. Sell him for good money and quickly move.

Dont think modric is gonna pull the same stunts berba did. Berbs had made it clear he wanted to move on, very early in his spurs career. Modric on the other hand is an integral part of an evolving team, and so i think he is much less willing to kick up a stink...

I think most of the stuff seen in the media has been blown out of proportion, and in fact, he will be here next season and for many more if we continue to improve...

Don't see the fuss with selling Modric, personally - as long as they achieve the right sort of price.

Either by retirement or transfer, he's going to go at some point, and anything above £30m more than replaces him.

Although I fully appreciate his place as the heartbeat of the team, I don't think he's irreplaceable by any means. Does he score? Assist? Stop the scoring of goals? I'm by no means suggesting he's without quality, but I do think we get a little carried away with our emotional attachment to our players and the notion that a rival might forcibly take one of them.

That said, I do hope he stays - but every player has his price, surely?

So exactly when do you think we will stop selling our best players to the teams above us and who we are trying to replace in the Top 4?

Maybe never. But that doesn't necessarily mean he can't be replaced, by better or equal, (or someone fitting the team dynamic) for less or equal amounts.

Manchester United sold Ronaldo. Arsenal are going to sell Fabregas. AC Milan sold Kaka. I'm not saying selling him without some sort of contingency plan in place, but the idea that our collective worlds will just fall apart if he leaves is more than a little extreme...
