I understood completely what he meant by virtual cycle.

Well, yeah - he meant virtuous cycle.

If I wrote "Mihir Bose is a funking twat" you'd still know what I meant as well. I don't think it's too much to ask that the hugely well-paid editor of BBC Sport can use the English language properly.

mihir is definitely a spurs fan. I agree with worcestersauce. He's definitely trying to conceal how happy he is for us and so is playing it down. bose loves the spurs.

I think it's unlikely - even for Bose - that he got both words wrong.

That plus the fact that vicious circle actually means the exact opposite of virtuous cycle.

It might just be a matter of perspective.

Cambridge dictionary:vicious circle
a continuing unpleasant situation, created when one problem causes another problem which then makes the first problem worse

A continuing unpleasant situation - sounds like Spurs lack of Champions League qualification to me

Read the sentence again. He's saying that the teams who qualify are then by definition more likely to qualify again because of the money, prestige etc. This is a virtuous cycle for the CL clubs.

That's the point he's trying to make.

The fact that we're having to debate it rather highlights the problems of slipshod, lazy use of our language.

Their subs need shooting—but what was he thinking of in the first place?

As he puts it, it's simply a 'cycle'—no need for it to be 'virtual', 'vicious' or anything else. His heart may be in the right place, and for the neutral this is a good article—even though for us it may be 'Tell us something we don't know'—but the expression is unacceptably sloppy for a highly paid journo.

SS57 - I'm pretty sure the only sub-editor on a blog is going to be a spellchecker, and that doesn't help if you've got the word wrong to begin with.....

apart from being littered with grammatical mistakes and spelling errors that a 12-year-old would blush at he makes some good points.

what he hasn't addressed is that the 87 side was the end-of-an-era kind of side (Hoddle leaving, Ardiles, Clemence, Gough about to)

The players we have at our disposal are far younger (though not necessarily better) than the '87 side but far better than at any time since. In terms of squad it's not even comparable.
