Forgive me for being slightly narrow minded, but what do Zagreb do with all this money? It gives them the ability to be able to set these high values for undoubtably talented players, as they obviously have enough money in the bank to not be forced to sell. Just don't seem to do much with it they I know of (very limited knowledge about them though!).

That's something most Dinamo fans want to know as well. Dinamo isn't transparent with its finances and it's one of the biggest problems around the club.

We've had many big transfers over the last few years but not enough of it has been reinvested into the club (in terms of quality replacements). One of the problems, granted, is that the sale of players is basically the only source of income/revenue. Dinamo gets little-to-nothing from ticket sales, merchandise, TV money, etc. They are responsible for some of it (poor relations with fans), but for the most part it's just the way it is.

Dinamo does put quite a bit of money into the youth schools and "partner clubs." They have a lot of players under contract (from youth to professional). No doubt this takes up a large chunk of the money, but how much exactly is what people want to know.

The other problem is that players want to leave at an early age. They quickly feel like they have "outgrown" the 1.HNL (Croatian Football League). A few good games is often enough to attract the interest of European clubs, some of which are the very top ones. It doesn't take much to turn their heads. Dinamo's done fairly well in turning down initial offers. They don't sell on the first offer. The biggest issue I have is the timing of some of the sales and the inability to SMARTLY reinvest. Too many poor decision making on incoming transfers.

The one bright spot is the seemingly never-ending supply of talent coming through the ranks. Not all of it is "home grown" (in terms of starting at the club at an early age), as they do get a lot of the most talented players from around Croatia. But whenever one star gets transferred, it seems like a new star is ready to emerge. There's a hype machine that always comes out when Dinamo introduces "the next big thing", but for the most they end up proving their value (and that it wasn't all just media made, which is often the accusation).

Dinamo actually has a really exciting generation of footballers. They are stacked with talent in the '94-'97 age group. They consistently do well in international tournaments and many can't wait to see how they will develop in the next few years.

There's always a "what could have been" when you look at players who have transferred out of Dinamo in the last few years. What if they were all still at the club. Unfortunately, it's just not realistic in today's football climate.

on the bench today

Came on to start the second half. Inter did poorly, had Chivu sent off and lost 3-1, but Kovacic showed some signs. I think he'll feature often enough.

From Gazzetta dello Sport:

He initially declined the "#10", but they insisted that he take it. They plan to build around him (in the future).

Very good game last night vs. Cluj (Europa League).

Played as a deep-lying playmaker (4-1-2-1-2).

Most touches (79), most successful dribbles (4), a great assist for the second goal, 89% pass completion, some good tackles. Always made himself available. 18-years-old and already looks a very important player in that Inter midfield (coaches/teammates/media/fans are all raving about him). Very composed and calm. Not the finished product (yet), but you can immediately see "something special" in him.

Its annoying that for these prices we could have got Kovacic or another top bracket young prospect such as Isco (back in the summer), yet we spent the money on Sigurdsson and Dempsey.

Anyway, thanks as ever for the insight Dinpomp.

The Croatian we really should be looking at is Dino Drpic.

He may not offer much in terms of quality cover, but he would arrive with Mrs Drpic, aka Nives Celzijus.

This is true. But the problem with last summer was that we were in transition, having lost Modric and van der Vaart as well as having a new manager. Signing an 18 year old Croatian player would have been a big risk, regardless of how talented he looked. Realistically, especially with Villas Boas in charge, you would have been looking at spending the first six months letting him adjust to the country and the pace and intensity of the English game before slowly introducing him into the first team.

The manager needed to hit the ground running this year and Sigurdsson and Dempsey were already Premier League proven, so would have been capable to be placed straight into the first team.

I think we've already started to see signs, now that we have a fairly settled squad, that we'll now be looking at younger players in the 17-23 age bracket (we already signed Fryers and Holtby for instance) as there will be much less pressure on them having an immediate impact on the first team.

Also, someone get Dimpomp's contact details to Daniel Levy.

The game is passing him by, not his fault though, the manager got his tactics all wrong.

He was excellent (last night). First leg he was invisible as Inter couldn't get hold of the ball.

One write-up:

Mateo Kovacic conquers San Siro. The Italian media hails theCroatian talent today after his great game against Tottenham. When he was substituded he received great ovations from the supporters. As everyone knows the San Siro is a hard stadium to win and the fans could be very spoiled, but Kovacic hasn’t been effected by the pressure and instead he has carried his responsibilities with pride, something that he proved yesterday. Grande Mateo.

Mateo Kovacic has made the most number of tackles (6) and interceptions (5), best pass completion (94%) and most passes- 64. (even though he left the match in the 79th min., while most played the full 120 min.).

He has a great maturity. I can't help but feel if Inter's midfield was more dynamic, had better off-the-ball movement, that he would be even more effective. At times he would run forward with the ball waiting for options, but everything seemed way too static.

I'm still waiting for him to go on some of his slalom runs. I think as he gets more comfortable, he'll start to show that side of his game more. Either way, he's getting much praise today.
