You've just answered your own question. Breaking into a big club at a young age is more a recommendation of a players talent than playing for a small club in the Bosnian league is a condemnation of Modric's potential as a footballer. I assume you were one of the people who thought that Gio Dos Santos would naturally become a world class player just because he was playing for Barca at 17?

Out of the (now) world class players who are of similar age to Gio none were playing for big clubs at 17/18. Ozil was at Schalke, Busquets stuck in Barca B, Bale at Southampton, Suarez (little bit older) at Groningen, Reus at Rot Weiss Ahlen (!), Juan Mata was in Real Madrid B, Muller in Munich reserves, Di Maria at Rosario, Jordi Alba was playing for Valencia B and Pastore was at Huracan.

I think you see my point.
So you are saying that he will not be a top class player because he is playing for a top club at 18?? That is crazy logic.

If you were arguing that playing for a top club so young doesn't necessarily mean you will be world class, that is completely true, but your logic is just odd.

No, I'm just saying that playing for a big club at 18 doesn't necessarily mean Kovacic will go on to be a top player.

Yep. Obviously talented, as was Johnny Two Saints. Far more to it than that though. Let's see where we are in 3 or 4 yrs. Got the look of one of the gooduns though. Avoiding injury and getting regular playing time is the important thing right now for him. An injury especially has completely side tracked many promising players.

No need to be so quick judge after all. I was still trying to put my tinkle into every girl I met at that age (even the fat ones), not looking at trying to break into the very highest echelons of my chosen profession.

Kovacic vs. Atalanta:

Another good game. Central figure. Already stands out in that midfield. His quality is clearly above the others around him (not that the current Inter midfield is anything to brag about, but still impressive for an 18-year-old). 92% pass completion, 6 successful dribbles, 5 tackles, and you can hear the fans react every time he gets the ball. Commentators and media already running with the "il professore" nickname.

He's playing very deep, the Italian style of deep-lying playmaker. But he's still going on some of his trademark runs/slaloms. Once he gets a little more freedom and some more quality around him, he'll be even better. Exciting player/prospect.

Well anyway, looks like Spurs did make an approach/bid. Just not enough. 15m euros might seem like a lot for an 18-year-old, but if he's not worth 20m+ within the next couple of seasons, I'll be very surprised. Time will tell.

Even though he hasn't played many games for Inter yet, I've seen enough (especially since I already knew what kind of player was in question, due to his time at Dinamo Zagreb). He'd already go at the price. The sky is the limit.

Yeah, I remember when he was 17, I thought to myself that kids probably the best young talent in Europe. Shame we missed out but you cant win them all I suppose.

Would of happily paid 15 million for him. He's going to be one of the best midfield players in the world.

A midfield of Kovacic - Verratti - Sandro/Dembele would be crazy ... Stuff of dreams

Lots of talk of Verratti going to Madrid.

Inter are putting together a good young team. Inter paid 13 million Euros for him, it's those types of deals we need to be looking at doing. He'll be worth 30 million at least in a few years.

I wondered why after selling Modric, Kovacic wasn't the first signing we made long before Inter got him. 13 mil is a good deal for a kid of his quality and was thoroughly gutted we didnt commit, now watching him at Inter I am devistated. As ItsBoris mentioned above, his price will skyrocket in a couple of years. So young and already running there midfield afte a couple of months in the country... Incredible talent.

makes you wonder why we spent £8m on Sigs and £6m on Dempsey when there's quality like that available. I'd swap both of them for him in a heartbeat.

Maybe that's what you get for playing moneyball rather than talent spotting

Didn't even need to talent spot. Could have just bought a copy of football manager. Both Verratti and Kovacic have been immense on there for years...

they were proven prem players. prem players who were proven to be GOOD. in hindsight kovacic seems like a no brainer but at the time he was a very risky signing.

I think we're jumping the gun a bit here. He's a talent, no doubt, and he's had a solid first season but let's see how he does next season before all this sycophantism. Gonna be the best MF in the world is a bold claim

Thanks for the vid and your first post!

Didn't think that you were allowed to upload footie vids to youtube with decent music, was under the impression that it had to be cheezy homoerotic eurodisco and trance for 14 year old girls in hairy moon boots. So props to the guy who made the vid as well!
